2
The IMS is introduced with UMTS Release 5 What
is the IP-based Multimedia Subsystem?
  • 3GPP has defined three domains for UMTS Networks
  • Circuit Switched domain
  • Packet Oriented domain
  • IP Multimedia subsystem
  • Supports SIP-based call control of
    packet-oriented connections.
  • Enables voice-oriented services as well as
    multimedia services.
  • PO domain offers bearer services while IM
    subsystem offers control.
  • Possibility to have multiple bearer channels in
    one session.

3
IMS IP-based Multi-media System
  • IMS is the standardized multimedia control domain
for SIP based services and applications
  • Multimedia Service Platform based om Internet
    Protocols
  • SIP
  • Diameter
  • COPs
  • IPv6 (IPv4 under discussion)
  • Access agnostic
  • UMTS, GPRS, WLAN, DSL
  • Developed in 3GPP
  • Work begun in mid 1999
  • Named the IP Multimedia Subsystem by 3GPP
  • Replacing the term All-IP
  • 3GPP Release 5 is mainly IMS
  • 3GPP Release 5 replaces the previous Release 2000
  • IMS products are available now

IMS Benefits
Benefits for the User
Benefits for the Operator
  • Fast and flexible service creation (1 SIP client)
  • Innovative realtime multimedia service offers
  • Full control of services by operator
  • Service differentiation by flexible bandwidth
    allocation and guaranteed QoS
  • Fixed / mobile convergence
  • Common service control infrastructure for PS
domain for cost optimization and easy service
    introduction
  • Longterm CS migration by shifting voice traffic
    towards PS domain
  • Single sign on
  • Application bundling in realtime (e.g.
simultaneous usage of voice and data
    applications)
  • Realtime messaging without store foreward
  • Multiparty communication services (e.g. chatting,
    conferencing)
  • Enrichment and personalization (e.g. realtime
multimedia, buddy lists, presence, push services,
    subscriber self administration)
  • Anywhere service access from various access
    networks

19
Summary
  • IMS enables the operator to build up new IP-based
mobile services and applications under his
control (e.g. PIM, Push to Talk) through
    standardised APIs and interfaces
  • IMS provides the capability to offer any mixture
of peer to peer real-time and non-real-time
services (Rich Voice, Data, Video,) to increase
    ARPU and reduce churn rate
  • The IMS based highly scalable common service
control infrastructure helps the operator to keep
OPEX low while deploying new services rapidly
(central user admin, standardized interfaces, )
  • Using an IP-transport network supports the
fix/mobile convergence of those services by
enabling access over any network (UMTS, WLAN, or
    fixed broadband network,..)
  • Siemens IMS is available today
