Modernism and Anti-modernism

Modernism Slide 1/5
  • Modernism believes in the power of human beings
to create, improve, and reshape the world around
them, with the aid of scientific knowledge and
    technology.
  • Technology A broad concept that deals with human
usage of tools and crafts to control their
    environment. (Human technology probably begins
    with FIRE)
  • Goal of Modernism Identify what is holding
back progress, and then replace old methods with
    new methods of achieving prosperity.

  • Slide 2/5
  • Advancements in technology can often be traced to
    military and defense advancements
  • Modernist Movement New realities of the
industrial and mechanized age are permanent and
    unstoppable. People should accept that
technology and new methods of living life are
    better.
  • Modernism begins about 1890-1910.
  • Industrialism
  • Economic and social system based on development
    of large mechanized industries
  • production of large quantities of cheap
    manufactured goods
  • concentration of employment in urban factories
  • Division of Labor specialization of cooperative
work in specific tasks and roles to increase
    output efficiency

Modernism Continued Slide 3/5
  • Globalization People around the globe are more
connected than ever. Information and money flow
more quickly. Goods and services produced in one
part of the world are increasingly available in
all parts of the world. International travel and
    communication are more frequent.
  • BUT ARE THESE MODERN EFFECTS FOR THE BETTER?

5
Anti-modernism Slide 4/5
  • Anti-modernism belief that the scientific and
technologic development of society is having a
negative impact on humans and planet earth.
  • Anarcho-primitivism This philosophy argues for
return to non-"civilized" ways of life through
    abandonment of unnecessary technology
    deindustrialization.
  • Development Critics they see modernization as
harmful for both humans and the environment.
  • Development critics are often pacifists who
    support only local-level governments. Although
    development critics are mostly humanistic
(believing in the inner-goodness of human
beings), some blame human nature for the
    destruction of the environment.

Anti-modernism Continued Slide 5/5
  • Future Shock In 1970 futurologist Alvin Toffler
said future shock was a psychological condition
where people experience too much change in too
    short a time period.
  • Toffler The accelerated rate of technological
and social change will overwhelm people, leaving
them disconnected and suffering from shattering
    stress and disorientation future shocked.
