14HOW TO BEST USE AN AGENCY AS A HIRING MANAGER
- Invest time explaining organisation culture and
team - Invest time in your Account Manager (once a level
of trust is developed, life becomes a lot
easier) - Invest time explaining Job Briefs in detail up
front - Give heads up whenever possible on upcoming
projects and requirements (any lead time is gold
for us!) - Quality feedback is essential to assist in fine
tuning the search criteria (those interviewed and
not interviewed) - Successful, quality recruitment is a joint
venture!
15HOW TO BEST USE AN AGENCY AS A JOB SEEKER
- Develop a good relationship with 2 or 3 Agencies
- Give them early warning of your availability (4-6
weeks) - Keep in regular contact with them (at least
weekly when you are active in the market) - Help them help you, by telling them the bottom
line on rate or salary along with your preferred
remuneration - Be patient once represented for a role. Only call
them if you have information for them when
represented, not just for an update - Avoid applying directly to Companies advertising
themselves. always ask your preferred Agencies
first if they have the role.
16APPLYING FOR JOBS - PERMANENT
- Always ask for a copy of the full Job Brief
- Develop a cover letter explaining why you are a
good fit for the actual position (1 page max) - Highlight successful projects including size of
project (e.g. 50M) and size of team - Highlight any other relevant career achievements
or awards - Give a reasonable overview of your style of
management and personal drivers.
17APPLYING FOR JOBS - CONTRACT
- Lots of PMs looking not many good ones!
- Always ask for a copy of the full Job Brief
- The Consultant will only have approx 60-90
seconds to assess your possible suitability, so
do not waste time producing a large covering
letter bullet points addressing the brief are
best! - Highlight relevant information in the body of the
CV - Create 2 or 3 CVs that best display different
skills (e.g. Infrastructure / Applications / Both
or Business / I.T.) for the Agency Database for
search purposes, then be prepared to produce one
for each individual role (if necessary).
18YOUR CV FORMAT
- 5-7 pages maximum
- Page 1 - cover sheet (normally prepared by Finite
for client purposes) - Page 2 - personal details (name, address,
education and career highlights) - Page 3 - table showing date/company/role/brief
JD - Pages 4 - 7 reverse chronological history
wherever possible (make sure that you address the
brief) - Ensure date / company and role are on each
position - No photos or long paragraphs keep it concise!
- Lots of white space
- Anything over 10 years ago needs very little
detail.
