Title: Hand in Lecture Problem 6 Go over solution

1
Lecture 17
  • Hand in Lecture Problem 6 Go over solution
  • Ch 9 Synthetics/Reactions
  • This week in lab
  • Ch 6 Final Report Due
  • Synthetic Selection Sheet Due (Ch 9)
  • Procedure 2 of Ch 8
  • Next week in lab
  • Synthetic Experiment 1 PreLab Due

2
Synthetic Experiment Selection Sheet
  • Due this week
  • Select 5 of the 50 experiments listed on page
    201 in the
  • Lab Guide do not choose experiments that are
  • similar reaction types or that have the same
    types of
  • analyses
  • Do NOT pick 70, 114, or 204!!
  • Fill out the sheet completely
  • Tear out the sheet and turn it in at the
    beginning
  • of the lab period
  • Your TA will tell you the 2 of the 5 that you
    will do

3
Ch 9 Synthetics
  • Main types of reactions
  • Oxidation and reduction
  • Esterification
  • Friedel-Crafts
  • Elimination
  • Substitution
  • Aldol reaction
  • Aldol condensation

4
Ch 9 Synthetics
  • Read chapter 9 thoroughly (Quiz 6)
  • Download revised PreLab grade sheets from website

  • Info in Chapter 9
  • Comments on Synthetic Experiments
  • Instrument Room Comments
  • Miscellaneous Comments Techniques
  • Troubleshooting

5
Comments on Synthetics
  • May need to repeat an experiment.
  • Yields count! The quality of your technique
    will be
  • evaluated.
  • Check Chemical Inventory when looking for
    chemicals check
  • hooded shelf, common shelf, refrigerators, ask
    class/TA,
  • or ask stockroom
  • Get melting points for all solid products.
    Report yields for
  • all products.

6
Instrument Room Comments
  • Make up samples for spectral analysis during
    your lab time!
  • If you need to run a GC-MS, you must run a GC
    first!
  • RI is refractive index. It is a physical
    property just like
  • boiling point for liquid samples.
  • Please do not leave samples in the Instrument
    Room. During
  • your lab time, collect your samples from the
    Instrument Room
  • and keep them in your locker. At the end of
    the semester,
  • dispose of your samples.

7
Miscellaneous Comments Techniques
  • Chemicals may be stored in dessicator jars. You
    will also see
  • DrieRite in these jars. It is a drying agent
    (blue and white
  • chips). Do not mistaken DrieRite for your
    chemical.
  • Anhydrous solvents are stored in septum-topped
    bottles.
  • Inserting tubing through a septum.
  • Sealing capillary tubes
  • Weighing liquids
  • Syringe-pipet connections
  • Instant micro scale distillation

8
Troubleshooting
  • No product formed
  • No reaction - recovered starting material
    verify by TLC
  • Check reagent bottles
  • Check times and temperatures
  • Check calculations
  • Low yield after recrystallization
  • Added too much solvent? Concentrate solution.
  • Obtain an oily-non-crystalline product? Try to
    recrystallize
  • product to get a solid.
