Assessment process
  • allocation to an EAC
  • assessment by EACs and external assessors
  • except APAI-only and projects under 50k per year
  • 2 EAC members only
  • external assessors usually OzReaders not
    IntReaders
  • unlikely to be specialists in the field
  • EACs consider applications, assessment reports,
    and rejoinders
  • decide on final rankings level of funding

Administrative Requirements (2)
  • Readers assessors names numerical scoring
    are not provided to applicants.
  • Every effort made to obtain 3 assessments but ARC
    reserves the right to make decisions based on any
    number of assessments or solely on the assessment
    of the EAC.
  • LP no assessments for requests for 50k p.a. or
    less. But rejoinder may be submitted.

Administrative Requirements (3)
  • Only the originating applicant can submit a
    rejoinder. Co-applicants may view the rejoinder
    but do not have editing access.
  • Rejoinder must not exceed 5,000 characters (key
    strokes). Paragraph returns and other special
    characters may equate to two characters.
  • Text only no diagrams or tables to illustrate
    your rejoinder.

Accessing Preparing your Rejoinder
  • To access the assessments, log onto ARC GAMS
    using your ID and Password http//www.arc.gov.au/g
    ams_login/default.htm. If you have forgotten your
    ID or password please email arc_at_research.uq.edu.au
    (include GAMS in the subject header)
  • If you are a reader for the ARC, check that the
    drop down menu at the top left hand corner
    displays Applicant.

Accessing Preparing your Rejoinder
  • To view an assessment click on the assessor
    number represented as LGxxxxx of LHxxxxx.
  • Assessments can be printed out or cut and pasted
    into a word document.
  • To prepare your rejoinder click on Edit
    Rejoinder which is located below the assessor
    numbers.
  • Key in rejoinder text. Text only is accepted and
    must not exceed 5,000 characters.

Accessing Preparing your Rejoinder
  • 7) Once the text rejoinder has been entered
    click on the save button in the left hand
    margin. Pressing the back button will return
    you to your homepage on GAMS.
  • Further edits can be made by repeating the above
    steps.
  • Once the rejoinder is complete you must press the
    Local Submit link that appears after Rejoinder
    on your GAMS homepage.
  • Rejoinders must be submitted to ORPS by the due
    date Sunday, 12 March 2006.

General Advice
  • Submit your response as soon as possible GAMS
    is slow unresponsive at peak times.
  • Read your assessments carefully to identify the
    issues to be addressed.
  • Prioritise your response think about the
    assessment criteria. LP Track Rec 20, Project
    55 (signinnov 25, approach 20, NB 10), Ind
    Ptner 25
  • Group your response according to assessor or
    thematically.

General Advice
  • Layout is important clear, concise, easy to
    read.
  • Use positive comments from assessors to offset
    negative comments from another.
  • Do not be complacent if reviews look positive.
  • Respond positively to all issues.
  • Avoid being defensive or aggressive.

General Advice
  • If assessors make a comment relating to an aspect
    of the project that was covered in the
    application refer to that section.
  • Use current literature to support your response.
  • Update areas of research progress (pilot data,
    track record).

General Advice
  • Go over your response several times is it clear
    and convincing? Have you defended the project
    against the criticisms? Have you answered the key
    questions?
  • Ask a colleague/team members to review your
    rejoinder provide them with a copy of the
    assessors comments
  • Participate in the Faculty Readership Program.
  • Your Rejoinder can make a difference!
