• Title- ponder the title before reading the poem.
• Paraphrase- translate the poem into your own
  words.
• Connotation-contemplate the poem for meaning
  other than literal.
• Attitude-Observe both the speakers and the
  poets attitude

• Shifts-Note shifts in speakers and in attitudes.
• Title-Examine the title again, this time on an
  interpretative level.
• Theme-Determine what the poet is saying.

• Identifying poetic devices is secondary to
  gaining an understanding of how the devices
  operate in conveying the effect and meaning of
  the poem.
