Title: Finite Element Project

1
Finite Element Project
  • Cound Arbour Bridge, 1797 (
    Shorpshire, England )
  • Lecturer
    Yan Zhuge
  • Prepared by Ho
    Tien Peng

2
Introduction
  • Analysing Cound Arbour Bridge
  • Constructed from cast iron
  • Analysed using linear elastic, finite element
    analysis
  • Analysis involved vehicular traffic load (UDL)
    and point load

3
Dimension
  • Side view of the simplified structure

5
Dimension of the bridge
  • Plan view of the bridge

6
Properties
  • Concrete slab (Plate)
  • - thickness 0.15m
  • - youngs modulus 3.429 x 104 MPa
  • - poisson ratio 0.2
  • Steel structure (Beam)
  • - youngs modulus 2.0 x 105 MPa
  • - iron arch 250UB25.7
  • - steel truss 200UB29.8
  • - poisson ratio 0.25

7
Modelling
  • Prepared coordinates (x, y, z) for the nodes of
    the half section bridge.
  • Connected all the nodes.
  • Mirrored the half section to obtain a complete
    model.
  • Applied appropriate elements (plate/beam)
  • Checked for nodes connection, missing nodes, and
    other faults.

8
Analysis
  • Determine whether the arches were needed for the
    bridge or not.
  • Behaviour of the bridge such as displacement,
    bending and shear.
  • The condition of the bridge by applying different
    load case at the midspan.

Conclusion
  • The iron arches supported the bridge by giving
    extra strength.
  • The bridge had sufficient strength for vehicular
    use.
  • It was able to be used by huge trucks with
    maximum loadings. (350kN)

21
Difficulties
  • Finding appropriate bridge properties as it was
    built in 1797
  • Assuming live load of standard fatique vehicular.
  • Strand7
  • - offsetting arches from one same node
  • - solving and getting appropriate results
