    Bruce as king despite been beaten
  • Therefore the war continued with the Scots
    raiding the north of England on hobies
  • Berwick was recaptured in 1319

The declaration of Arbroath
  • The Scottish people supported their king by
    writing a letter to the Pope
  • It was drawn up and sealed at Arbroath in 1320
  • This became one of the earliest and most defiant
    declarations of independence in the world

    III signed a treaty
  • Scotland was recognised as an independent country

    of excommunication
  • He had asked James Douglas to take his heart when
    he died to Jerusalem
  • This was done but on the way the crusaders were
    ambushed and killed
  • His body and heart were buried in Melrose Abbey
