• The English persuaded the Pope not to accept
  Bruce as king despite been beaten
• Therefore the war continued with the Scots
  raiding the north of England on hobies
• Berwick was recaptured in 1319

The declaration of Arbroath

• The Scottish people supported their king by
  writing a letter to the Pope
• It was drawn up and sealed at Arbroath in 1320
• This became one of the earliest and most defiant
  declarations of independence in the world

• For so long as one hundred men shall remain
  alive we shall never under any circumstances
  submit to the domination of the English. For it
  is not for glory or riches or honours that we
  shall fight but for freedom alone, which no good
  man will give up except with his life.

The Treaty of Edinburgh, 1328

• In 1327 Edward II was removed from the throne and
  murdered
• At last in 1328 the English gave in and Edward
  III signed a treaty
• Scotland was recognised as an independent country

• The Scots were to pay 20,000
• A marriage was arranged to keep peace Edwards
  sister Joan was to marry Bruces son David
• The English refused to let the stone of destiny
  be returned until 1996!
• Bruce was recognised as king

Freedom

• Money was short after such a long war
• The nobles who had supported Edward had to give
  up their English estates or have their Scottish
  estates confiscated
• Randolph and Douglas were rewarded for their
  loyalty

Good King Robert

• Died on 7 June 1939 at Cardross
• A week after his death the pope removed the ban
  of excommunication
• He had asked James Douglas to take his heart when
  he died to Jerusalem
• This was done but on the way the crusaders were
  ambushed and killed
• His body and heart were buried in Melrose Abbey
