did for us what we could never have done for
    ourselves - Romans 56.
  • Jesus drank the cup of His suffering because it
was not possible for it to be otherwise and our
sins be forgiven - Matthew 263,42 Hebrews

of the devil - Ezekiel 184,20 Romans 623. Cf.
    Romans 79-11 1 Corinthians 1556.
  • By submitting to death and then being
resurrected, Jesus conquered the power of death -

on the morning of Jesus resurrection.

a matter of time until death is completely
    subjugated to Him - 1 Corinthians 1524-28.

The Death Of The Cross
11

accepted death for our sins He offered Himself
    for us - 2 Corinthians 521 Hebrews 29. Cf.

    Deuteronomy 2122,23. Cf. Matthew 2746.
  • In addition to the physical torture of it, there

    lowest of criminals.

The Death Of The Cross

    His death - Romans 62-4 Colosians 212.

The Death Of The Cross
15
To Be Saved From Sin, We Must Die And Be Raised
With Christ
  • Having been crucified with Christ, we must then
live as those who have done so - Galatians 220
    524,25. Cf. Romans 65-7.
  • Not only so, but if necessary we must be willing
actually to partake of Christs sufferings - 1
    Peter 412,13. Cf. Philippians 310,11.

The Death Of The Cross
16
The Significance Of The Blood Of Christ

life is in the blood - Genesis 410 94
    Leviticus 1710-14. Cf. Deuteronomy 1223.
  • The requirement that the wages of sin is death

committed, death must occur to satisfy the
demands of justice, i.e. life must be taken to
    atone for sin.

  • The blood of Christ, and only the blood of
Christ, can cleanse the stain of sin from a soul
    - Revelation 15. What can wash away my sin?
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.
  • It is in the act of baptism (into His death) that
we contact the cleansing blood of Christ -
    Romans 63,4 Colossians 212. Cf. Galatians 327.

The Blood Of The Cross
19
Baptism, The Church, And The Blood Of Christ
  • In baptism, we are washed from our sins - Acts
    2216 Ephesians 526.
  • The church of Christ consists of those who have
    been cleansed by His blood.
  • Each Lords Day, those who have been bought by
the Lords blood commemorate His death on the
    cross in the Lords Supper.

The Blood Of The Cross
20
Baptism, The Church, And The Blood Of Christ
  • In the Lords Supper, Christians commune with the
body and blood of the Lord and proclaim His death
    until He comes - 1 Corinthians 1016 1123-26.
  • As Christians, we ought to live each day as those
whose salvation was bought by the blood of Christ
    - 1 Corinthians 619,20.

The Blood Of The Cross
21
The Love Of God For Us Shown In The Cross
  • The most obvious fact of the New Testament is
that God gave His Son for us because He loved us
    - John 314-17 Romans 56-8. Cf. 1 John 31,16
    47-11.
  • Gods love for His Son Matthew 317 John 335
520 was not inconsistent with allowing Him to
suffer a greater good was accomplished by
permitting His death than by preventing it.

The Love Of The Cross
22
The Love Of God For Us Shown In The Cross
  • Going to the cross obviously required love on
Jesus part also - John 1513. Cf. 1011.
  • Even as He hung upon the cross, Jesus love
remained actively concerned about others - Luke
    2334 John 1925-27.
  • Jesus act of love was voluntary - John 1017,18.

The Love Of The Cross
23
The Love Of God Evoked In Us By The Cross
  • Surely we cannot think seriously about the cross
without being constrained by it to give
ourselves back to God in love - 2 Corinthians
    514,15. Cf. 1 John 419.
  • How could we be anything less than grateful and
humble in view of the cross?

The Love Of The Cross
24
The Preaching Of The Gospel Is The Preaching Of
The Cross
  • The cross of Christ is the crux of the gospel.
  • The message of the cross is the power of God to
salvation and in it is revealed the righteousness
of God - Romans 116,17. Cf. Romans 101-3
    Philippians 37-11.

The Preaching Of The Cross
25
The Preaching Of The Gospel Is The Preaching Of
The Cross
  • The hearing of the gospel, the story of the
cross, is what produces obedient, saving faith -
    Romans 1017.
  • The preaching of the cross is a proclamation that
Jesus is Lord as well as Christ and it
announces the conditions of acceptance of the
    gospel - Acts 236-39.

The Preaching Of The Cross
26
To Detract From the Cross Is to Pervert the Gospel
  • We need to be constantly careful to give the
cross its proper emphasis in the gospel.
  • We may be guilty of innocently neglecting the
cross because of its familiarity, because it is
accepted as being accepted, because of the time
spent explaining the steps of obedience, etc.

The Preaching Of The Cross
27
To Detract From the Cross Is to Pervert the Gospel
  • What is it about the church that we promote and
advertise? How do we sell ourselves to the
    community?
  • Are we guilty of preaching ourselves? Cf. 2
    Corinthians 45.
  • Do we substitute carnal incentives, relevant
preaching, social programs, etc. for the story of
    the cross? Cf. Jeremiah 213.

The Preaching Of The Cross
28
To Detract From the Cross Is to Pervert the Gospel
  • Are we ashamed of the gospel? Are we tempted to
remove the offense of the cross? Cf. Romans
    116 Galatians 511.
  • Do we feel somehow that our new age calls for a
new message? Cf. 2 Timothy 43,4.

The Preaching Of The Cross
29
To Detract From the Cross Is to Pervert the Gospel
  • To please men, might we pervert the gospel so
that we turn it into different gospel? Cf.
    Galatians 16-10.
  • Is the result of our preaching and practice such
that the cross of Christ is made of no effect?
    Cf. 1 Corinthians 117-25.

The Preaching Of The Cross
30
To Detract From the Cross Is to Pervert the Gospel
  • Whether we are doing the preaching or we are
responding to preaching, we need to be certain
that it is the cross that is being preached and
that we are truly converted by that to the Lord
    himself.
  • It is the gospel by which God calls men to
    Himself - 2 Thessalonians 214.

The Preaching Of The Cross
31
To Detract From the Cross Is to Pervert the Gospel
  • Jesus taught that it would be His cross that
would draw men to Him - John 1232-34. We are
bound to fail in the end if we seek any other
drawing and transforming power than the cross.

The Preaching Of The Cross
32
Being a Disciple of the Lord Means Telling Others
About the Cross
  • The Great Commission applies, at least
indirectly, to us as the Lords people - Matthew
    2818-20 Mark 1615,16.
  • We each have been taught in order to teach others
    - 2 Timothy 22.
  • There are important ways each of us can be
involved in the preaching of the cross.
