Black Southerners Gain and Lose

• Supreme Court slowed the progress of African
  Americans after the war
• African Americans could, at first, vote, open
  businesses, buy farmland
• Had access to education very important
• At first, normal life did not change much for
  blacks in the South after Reconstruction
• KKK formed freedoms slowly limited
  segregation, eliminating black government
  officials, etc.
• Civil Rights Act of 1875 guaranteed African
  Americans the right to ride trains and use public
  facilities (like hotels) Supreme Court ruled
  this was a local, not a national, issue more
  loss of rights
