  • Making reliable electrical contacts to
    semiconducting materials is crucial for
    electronic device performance. Over the past
    decades, significant research efforts have been
    devoted to the fundamental understanding of
    metal/semiconductor interfaces in traditional
    materials. As new materials such as nanotubes,
    nanowires and molecules are being explored for
    nanoelectronics, many of the concepts developed
    for bulk contacts need to be re-examined because
    of the much different physics at the nanoscale.
    In this talk, I will discuss theoretical work
    addressing the basic properties of contacts to
    nanostructures. The factors determining the band
    alignment at the interface, including the role of
    Fermi level pinning will be addressed.
