3
Introduction
  • Reasons
  • Web-based learning and distance learning is
popular , but people still prefer reading on
    printed books.
  • How to bridge the gap between the printed pages
    and computers ?
  • To make the learning be anytime and anywhere ,
the learning devices must be easy to carry.

4
Introduction
  • Solutions
  • the Hard SCORM project
  • A pen-like device based on OCR(Optical Character
Reader) technology , called Hyper Pens in this
    paper.
  • The Hyper pens scan some tags printed on a book,
and a computer is used for multimedia
    interaction.
  • We call this Hyper pen-based learning the Hard
    SCORM project.
  • Other learning devices
  • E-Learning on PDAs or cellular phones
  • E-learning on PC

5
Introduction
6
Background
  • The SCORM Standard
  • Shareable Content Object Reference Model
  • A standard in e-Learning domain
  • Aims to make the learning object be reusable and
be accessed by any SCORM compatible LMS.
  • The LMS
  • Learning Management System
  • To manage Learning content?delivery?online test ,
    etc.

7
The Hard SCORM Project
  • The Hard SCORM Tags
  • Are recognized by Hyper Pen to allow Hyper Pen
    and the LMS to communicate.
  • Are divided for four categories

8
The Hard SCORM Project
  • The Authoring Tool
  • 1.Menu and Tool Bars 2.Content

9
The Hard SCORM Project
  • The Hard SCORM textbook ?
  • Hard SCORM Student ID for each student to log in
    to the LMS

10
The Hard SCORM Project
  • The Hard SCORM Machine ( based on the concept of
    finite state machine(FSM) )

The Hard SCORM Project
  • The Hard SCORM LMS

12
The Hard SCORM Project
  • The Hard SCORM LMS supports different learning
devices including PCs, PDAs , cellular phones,
    and Hyper Pen.
  • Have been tested
  • PDAs Dopod 700, HP iPAQ 5550, and
    AnexTEK SP230
  • Smartphones Dopod 565 and Mio8390

Conclusions
  • The main contribution of this paper is to connect
the reading in a traditional manner and learning
    by using electronic devices .
  • Although the final scores of the three distinct
    learning platforms are not significantly
    different, however
  • the learning performance is improved.(really?)
  • the information overload is not increasing
significantly while dealing with the multimodal
    learning devices.
  • We believe that, with high-tech mobile devices,
ubiquitous e-learning will have a positive impact
on education, especially for the younger who are
    enthusiastic about using mobile devices.

16
Future research
  • To use the built-in camera on a PDA or cellular
phone to recognize the tags .
  • To improve the tags for being more clearly
    recognized and having more functions.

17
My Comments
  • Do we really need to use the Hyper Pen?
  • No
  • a mouse can help us do all those works that the
    Hyper Pen helps us do.
  • In fact , the experiment result shows that the
Hyper Pen does not efficiently help the students
    learning.
