Pressure on Greenfield Sites
  • A Greenfield site is a site which has not
been built upon or used for development before
and is used for agriculture or just left to
    nature.

3
Introduction
  • Chep Lak Kok Airport was opened for commercial
operations in 1998. It is located on the north
shore of Lantau Island. It is a greenfield site
as it is on the outskirts of the City and had not
previously been used for development. The
original island was flattened and enlarged to
    make room for it.

4
Development
  • Kai Tak International Airport was previous
airport in Hong Kong before Chep Lak Kok
International Airport was opened in July 1998.
  • Kai Tak was the 4th busiest airport in the world
and had only a singular runway, meaning plans
were landing every two minutes on it.
  • This created problems and was a safety issue.
  • Kai Tak Airport was located on the Kowloon side
harbour front and was built before Hong Kong was
a major city with high rise buildings. This meant
planes landing very close to thousands of people,
a huge safety risk and created a lot of noise
    pollution for people nearby.
  • The aims of Chep Lap Kok International Airport
    are
  • To make use of Hong Kongs potential as the
gateway to Asia to do this it was built to have
a greater capacity for cargo and passengers (36
million people per year on average)
  • An increase in air traffic, now more than 600
planes are landing and taking off per day at Chep
    Lap Kok International Airport.
  • To provide a better environment for those who
lived in Kai Tak International Airports flight
    path.
  • To avoid congestion to provide efficient and
    quick check in services.
  • In total, the building of Chep Lap Kok
International Airport cost the HK government
    HK160 million.

5
Push and Pull Factors
  • Push Factors
  • Safety issues
  • Noise and air pollution
  • Not enough space
  • Outdated
  • Infrastructure not built to cope with so many
    people
  • Pull Factors
  • More space
  • Less noise and air pollution to urban areas
  • Opportunity to build new, well planned for the
    future infrastructure
  • Safer
