Si impersonale

• In Italian, it is very common to use the little
  word SI to indicate an impersonal or unspecified
  subject. 
• SI corresponds to the English "one," though it is
  much more frequent in Italian than it is in
  English.
• Instead of one, "you," "we," "people," and other
  expressions are usually used in English.

In English, we rarely use the construction...

• One is not allowed to smoke here.
• More colloquially
• You are not allowed to smoke here.
• You cant smoke here.

• The verb used after SI may be in the
• 3rd person singular or 3rd person plural. 
• This depends on the object of the verb.
• Si mangia poca pasta.
• Si mangiano tanti tipi di pasta.
• Si beve molto vino.
• Si  bevono molte birre.

Esempi

• Come si mangiano gli spaghetti a casa tua?
• -- Si preparano gli spaghetti con aglio, olio e
  peperoncino.
• Come si arriva alla spiaggia?
• -- Si puo prendere la macchina, il treno o il
  motorino. (N.B. with lists that use and e
  instead of or o the verb is plural si possono
  prendere la macchina, il treno e il motorino.)
• -- Si va in bicicletta.
