Title: Reversing The Effects Of Respiratory Poisons

1
Reversing The Effects Of Respiratory Poisons
Aim
To find a means of reversing the effects of
respiratory poisons.
NLS
Complex I
CoQ
Complex II
Succinate
CoQ
Ferrocyanide
Complex III
Cyt c
Complex IV
An oxygen electrode will be used to measure
oxygen uptake during respiration. Oxygen is used
up at complex IV, the final electron acceptor as
electrons move along the chain, so this can be
used to measure whether or not the electron chain
is active.
Method
Hypothesis
The effects of respiratory poisons can be
reversed by bypassing the enzyme complexes they
inhibit. Ho There is no means of
reversing the effects of respiratory poisons.
Conclusion
  • Rotenone inhibits complex I, so electron chain is
    resumed when succinate is added.
  • Antimycin A inhibits complex III, so electron
chain is resumed when Ferrocyanide is added.
  • Potassium Cyanide inhibits complex IV and blocks
    the electron chain.
