Title: North Carolinas End of Grade Tests

1
North Carolinas End of Grade Tests
  • What every parent needs to know

2
  • What is the purpose of the End of Grade Test?

3
EOG Purpose
  • 1 To assess the SCHOOL
  • - Proficiency
  • - Growth
  • - Subgroups
  • 2 To assess teachers
  • 3 To assess students

4
  • What is tested?

5
Tested Areas
  • Reading Grades 3,4,5
  • Math Grades 3,4,5
  • Science Grade 5
  • All tests are multiple choice, 40-70 questions, 4
    hour time limit.

6
  • What has changed?

7
  • Lots!

8
Changes
  • The biggest change the tests are harder.

9
2005 Reading 97 Level 3 or 4 2008 Reading
74 2005 Math 96 Level 3 or 4 2008 Math 85
Stoney Point EOG Results 2005 compared to 2008
10
Why the dropoff? The test simply did not measure
what it claimed
  • In 2005 a 5th grade student had to do the
following to be considered proficient and score
    a Level 3
  • - Answer 23 out of 50 Reading questions
    correctly
  • - Answer 28 out of 80 Math questions correctly
  • - Score in the 14th percentile

The gap between achievement on state assessments
and NAEP (national assessment)

12
The picture isnt as rosy as it seems
  • In 1993, 63 of NCs 4th graders tested at or
above grade level. In 2007, that number had
    jumped to 88.
  • Meanwhile, scores on the NAEP had barely moved at
all in 1992 56 of 4th graders in NC were at or
above the Basic level, while in 2007 that number
    went up to only 64.

13
Another Big Change Retest Procedures
  • Every child who scores below a level 3 must
participate in Project Excel and take the test
    over again including 4th grade
  • There are no more standard deviation passes
    (close enough doesnt count anymore)
  • Project Excel is an eight day remedial program

14
The big question -
  • What happens if my child fails the test? Does
that mean they automatically are retained?

15
Retention
  • No! EOG results are simply one tool that is used
in the retention/promotion decision. The final
decision, as always, rests with the school
    principal.

16
  • We are moving as soon as we can. When should we
    schedule our move for?

17
Scheduling
  • The second round of testing will not be completed
until the last day of school. Since we wont
know who will need to retake the test until May
26th, it is strongly recommended that every
parent plan to keep their child in school until
    the last day of school.

18
  • What can parents do to help their children?

19
How to Help
  • Encourage your child to read nonfiction texts.
80 of the test is now nonfiction passages.
  • Ask them questions on what they read plot, main
    idea, any probing questions (Why?)
  • Real life math problems always help money,
    recipes, measurement
  • Geometry is a focus in math

20
What else?
  • What other questions do you have?
  • More information is available at the NC
    Department of Public Instruction website
