- This is a brief overview of the story and journey
of social responsibility, undertaken by Avis in
South Africa.
- There are significant layers of
activity beneath these broader objectives.
- More importantly, it is supported and driven by
the people who work at Avis

A long history of CSR
- Wildlife conservation support Since 1974
- Numerous community support and upliftment
projects.
- Embracing the BBBEE drive to transform business
in South Africa Level 6 in 2007 to Level 3 in
2008

Time for an overhaul of it CSR policy
- Since 2006 - Avis SA management have sought a
broader scope of social responsibility within its
business of tourism and travel.
- .. to do more that what we were already doing.
- .. to do more than the expected.
- .. to go beyond the points earned in our BBBEE
CSI targets.

The questions we asked
- 1. What more can we do to improve the travel
experience for the disabled and disadvantaged
communities.
- 2. And, what more can we do to reduce our
impact on the environment.
- NOTE In both of the above without the
expectation of financial return from these
actions - to be true investments in humanity

The answers we got
- 1. Provide a free transport solution each year
to a community in desperate need thereof.
- 2. Meet the needs of the physically challenged
traveler.
- 3. Recycle the water we use to wash our vehicles.
- 4. To become a Carbon Neutral business.
- 5. Appoint a full time Sustainability Manager to
drive this process.

Transport for conservation
- Since 1970s Avis has provided much needed
transport sponsorship and financial assistance to
respected conservation bodies
- Wilderness Leadership
- School
- In 2006 we renewed our support for these
conservation bodies

Transport for those in need
- In 2008 Microbus donated to the Pretoria
School for Specialised Education replacing
their old vehicle destroyed by fire

Transport for those in need
- In 2009 Avis donated a Microbus to the Soweto
Equestrian Centre.
- Oscar Ncube gets his horse.

Cars for the disabled
- In 2006 Avis permanently installed a small
fleet with Hand Controls for Paraplegic renters
at no additional charge to the renter

Minibuses fitted for the disabled
- In 2008 A Microbus was equipped to transport
groups of physically disabled customers

Counters to serve the disabled
- In 2009 and 2010 - All new counters at major
airports fitted to better serve our disabled
customers at seated height

Environmental Focus Water recycled
- The SA Car Rental Industry uses an
estimated 700 million liters of water per annum. - Since 2007, Avis has invested R2 million in
water recycling plants at major depots Jhb, Cpt
and Dbn. - Avis will save approximately 40 mil liters of
water in 2009 and from 2010 and beyond, over 100
mil liters

Avis uses rain water to wash cars
- Avis adds captured rain water to recycle plants
and will be Water Neutral in coastal wet
seasons

Global Warming Avis goes Carbon Neutral
- In September 2009 - Avis became Carbon Neutral by
offsetting its annual internal GHG emissions
(9974 TCO2) in line with international protocol

Uchindile and Mapanda Forestry projects- Tanzania
Hufu waste heat recovery project - China

Becoming Carbon Neutral is a journey
- Being Carbon Neutral is more than a box ticking
exercise. - Energy reduction commitments and targets must be
put in place. - All staff need to become aware and participate.
- A serious approach to all-round recycling needs
to be made.

- Responsible action by business is no longer a
nice to do it is expectation from
customers and staff alike.
- Sustaining our planet for future generations is
our responsibility.
- We must be compelled to become participants in
practices of sustainability.
