Photography was invented in the midstand as a
resultof scientific debates about whether light
was a particle or wave. In turn, these
scientific discussions about light directly
influenced transcendental thinking about the
relationship between the material and spiritual
worlds. This talk focuses on the transcendental
writer, Henry David Thoreau, and his interest in
the ways photography as a medium of light
provided clues about the universal laws of
nature, which in his view extended to describe
human poetic creation.
