4
NPPDs Goals Communication
Bill Fehrman President and CEO, Nebraska Public
Power District
  • Ensure adequate water levels are in Sutherland
    Reservoir for GGS operation
  • Help GGS comply with discharge water temperature
    limits
  • Maintain long-term viability of the Ogallala
    Aquifer

5
NPPDs Goals Communication (cont.)
  • Identify and mitigate potential effects to
neighboring wells before they create adverse
    impact
  • Enforce NPPDs approved Board Resolution
  • Provide for communication and feedback

6
Communications
  • Local committee
  • Neighboring well owners/producers
  • Twin Platte NRD
  • Jim Goeke, Research Hydrogeologist, UNL
  • NPPD
  • Web-based Sutherland Reservoir elevation data
  • Web-based project status updates

7
Well Field Information Effects
Brian Barels Water Resources Manager, NPPD
  • Cooling Water Process
  • Well Field Configuration
  • Projected well field effects
  • Groundwater monitoring

8
(No Transcript)
9
Well Field Configuration
  • Approximately 40 wells
  • 2,000 gallons/minute
  • 350-500 feet deep
  • 30-40 year life
  • Final well locations are under review

10
Projected Well Field Effects
  • Some water table drawdown outside of GGS property
    boundary field is expected
  • Pumped water will not be released to the
downstream canal system other than through normal
    seepage/leakage
  • No influence on Republican River system
  • Low net consumption of water over time

Groundwater Monitoring- Overview -
  • Monitor effects of the GGS well field operation
  • To update groundwater model for use as a
    predictive tool for mitigation

14
Groundwater Monitoring Process
  • Bi-annual Independent monitoring by Twin Platte
    NRD
  • Thirty (30) existing non-NPPD wells near
    Sutherland Reservoir
  • Continuous monitoring of GGS wells
  • Additional NPPD monitoring of some wells off NPPD
    property
  • Data collected will be available to the public

15
Twin Platte NRD Independent monitoring sites
around GGS

Project Status
John Cizek Senior Engineer/Project Manager,
Gerald Gentleman Station
  • Well field installation contract to Henkle
    Drilling and Supply
  • NPPD staff and Hemenway Groundwater Engineering
    providing construction management
  • Mobilization April 19 drilling April 25
  • Wells installed, tested and registered by July 1
  • Installation of pumps, piping and power source
    will continue through Fall, 2004

17
Well Mitigation Process
Bill Fehrman NPPD President and CEO
  • Board Resolution
  • NPPD will proactively identify and mitigate
potential effects of the GGS well field on
neighboring wells before these effects create
    adverse impact
  • Neighboring well owners can also contact NPPD to
    initiate the mitigation process
  • Challenge is identification of well problem causes

18
Current Follow-up Actions
  • Reviewing well locations
  • Providing Sutherland Reservoir elevation data
  • Developing off property monitoring
  • Working with local committee
  • Continuing to take your comments
