11Why is PAL needed?
- The average retirement income of a senior from
the professional performing arts is about 10,000
less than half that of the average Vancouver
senior - Most disabled people and retirees end up living
in sub-standard accommodation outside the city,
and away from their peers and creative Contract
work does not facilitate mortgages, build
personal assets or provide for retirements
sources - By providing a safe and secure home and a
supportive environment, they are able to continue
to lead healthy and productive lives well beyond
retirement age - PAL provides unique benefits to the West End and
Coal Harbour communities

26Chronology
- March 2002 incorporation and first board
meeting. - November 2002 selected as the social housing
provider for the Coal Harbour site controlled by
the City of Vancouver and granted a 60 year lease
at nominal cost. - January 2003 in the absence of either federal
or provincial affordable housing programs,
launched a capital campaign to raise 5.8
million. - May 2006 building purchase completed and first
residents moved in. - November 2007 8th floor studio theatre
completed and first productions play to sold out
houses. - February 2008 - building fully occupied with
waiting list of 75. - November 2008 - PAL receives CMHC Best Practises
in Affordable Housing Award.
