FYI
  • Library Rules
  • FOOD DRINK ARE NOT PERMITTED
  • TALKING ON YOUR CELL PHONE IS NOT PERMITTED - but
    texting is
  • ALSO RINGERS SHOULD BE SET TO VIBRATE OR SILENT
  • Violation of these rules may result in a
    suspension of library privileges
  • Always check the Librarys website for hours of
    operation

4
Pre-Research
  • Make sure you have a manageable topic in mind
    when doing research
  • Nursing is too broad
  • but ethical issues in psychiatric nursing is
    much more manageable!
  • Outlines can help you organize your thoughts and
arrange your paper to make the most effective
    argument
  • Brainstorming keywords before you start
researching can speed the process up

5
Pre-Research Keywords
  • Thesis
  • There is a shortage of social workers in the
United States because many social workers burn
out, suffer personal injury or danger, and face
    an enormous workload every day.
  • Keywords are in pink and underlined.

6
Pre-Research Keywords
  • Keywords synonyms and related terms
  • Shortage lack
  • Social workers
  • United States America USA
  • Burn out as a verb burnout as a noun
  • Personal injury injury harm
  • Danger risk hazard threat peril
  • Workload work caseload

7
Pre-Research Keyword Searching
  • Keyword searching allows you to combine ideas
    together
  • If you search the Catalog on serial killers,
youll get EVERYTHING on serial killers
  • but if you search on serial killers AND men AND
United States, youll only get resources about
serial killers and men in the United States
  • Keyword searching reduces the number of resources
    youll have to wade through

8
Pre-Research Evaluating Resources
  • Its not enough to just find resources you need
to know whats GOOD and whats BAD for research
  • Some resources are inappropriate for research
    they dont contain scholarly information
  • Scholarly resources are what you need for an
    awesome research paper

9
Pre-Research Identifying Scholarly
  • Focuses on one particular discipline
  • Written by experts and practitioners from that
    discipline
  • Intended for others in that field
  • No ads
  • Peer-reviewed
  • Jargon Technical language of the field
  • Contains real research and is research-based

10
Pre-Research Examples
  • Shakespeare Quarterly
  • Journal of Food and Nutrition
  • American Journal of Knee Surgery
  • Library Quarterly
  • Journal of ER Nursing
  • Annals of Oncology
  • Textbooks
  • Non-fiction books

Usually written by dudes who look like this guy
(just kidding!)
11
Finding Resources
  • Remember the Library is a great place to find
scholarly resources its chockful of scholarly
    resources!
  • The Library also has librarians who can help you
if you need help all you have to do is ask! (We
    dont read minds. Yet.)
  • Remember before starting research, have a
    manageable topic.
  • Also, know what kinds of resources you need.
    Books? Articles? This helps!

Summarizing Paraphrasing
  • These are two very important tools when writing a
paper. Your professor is going to expect you to
use other resources, but he or she doesnt want
to read a paper thats nothing but quotations.
  • Summarizing is taking a chunk of text and boiling
it down to its most important parts the
bubblegum center of a Blow Pop

26
Summarizing
  • Children are totally insensitive to their
parents' shyness it is the rare child who labels
a parent shy ... This is understandable, since
parents are in positions of control and authority
in their homes and may not reveal their shy side
to their children. Also, since shyness is viewed
as undesirable by many children, it may be
threatening to think of parents in these terms.
At this young age, the parent is still idealized
    as all-knowing and all-powerful - - not dumb,
    ugly, or weak."Zimbardo, Philip G. (1977).
Shyness What it is, what to do about it.
    Cambridge, Mass. Perseus Books.

27
Summarizing
  • Children arent aware of their parents
shyness, and may well choose to not notice that
their parents are shy, since shyness is seen as
unfavorable and threatening to the childrens
    stability.

28
Paraphrasing
  • Paraphrasing is a little different. Youre not
reducing the information to its most important
part in fact, a paraphrase may be as long as
the selection being treated, but it doesnt have
    to be.
  • Paraphrasing is re-telling the information,
putting the information in your own words,
usually to make the information easier to
    understand for the reader.

29
Paraphrasing
  • Children are totally insensitive to their
parents' shyness it is the rare child who labels
a parent shy ... This is understandable, since
parents are in positions of control and authority
in their homes and may not reveal their shy side
to their children. Also, since shyness is viewed

Shyness What it is, what to do about it.
    Cambridge, Mass. Perseus Books.

30
Paraphrasing
  • Shyness is parents is something which the
children of such adults might not notice. Parents
are in positions of authority, they represent
stability, and it may be disconcerting or
destabilizing for the children to think of their
parents as timid. Moreover, bashfulness is
objectionable to children, and at a young age,
parents are placed on a pedestal.

31
Quotations Citations
  • Yes, summarizing and paraphrasing can be good and
keep a paper from being nothing more than a
    collection of related quotations
  • but sometimes quotations can make a big impact
in a paper. And quoting experts who agree with
you makes your argument that much stronger, which
makes your paper that much better.

32
Quotations
  • There are two main ways to quote
  • 1. Direct Author Smith says Blah blah
  • blah dee blah (32).
  • 2. Indirect According to one author,
  • Blah blah blah dee blah (Smith 32).
  • Paraphrasing is considered a way to quote, too,
cause you still have to put in a parenthetical
    citation like those above.

33
Citations
  • Any time you use someone elses work in yours,
you have to give credit where credits due.
Failure to do so will be considered plagiarism.
  • If you direct quote, indirect quote, paraphrase,
or summarize someone elses work, you will have
    to cite it.
  • Even if you got that info off the Internet, you
    still have to cite it.

34
Citations
  • There are different style guides to use when
    citing resources MLA, APA, Turabian,
Chicagothe list goes on and on!
  • Different types of resources are cited
differently and include different bits of
    information.
  • Sometimes you wont be able to find out all the
pieces. The important thing is to provide what
    information you do have.
