8Life Expectancy at Birth
According to the data available, total life
expectancy has kept pretty steady since 1992,
which is surprising given the overall level of
unrest in the country and the lack of economic
stability. Source World Development Indicators

11Health Concerns
- Georgia boasts a high number of physicians per
1,000 people 4.09 in 2003 (higher than during
Soviet time) - Smoking 53.3 men 6.3 women smoke (2001 data)
- AIDS 0.657Â per capita (reported)
- Main causes of death Heart failure, diabetes
mellitosis, suicide, birth-related injuries
12Trends in Family Formation
- The culture is extremely family-oriented and
marriage is widely promoted - Overall, most people are married, but the number
of unmarried young people is growing. - Divorce consistently low, but also too expensive
so people are forced to remain married, but
probably dont live together.
- Women are less likely to enter into a second
marriage than men, but more likely in 2000s
compared to early 1990s. According to official
statistics, in 2004, more women entered into a
second marriage than men. However, independent
studies have questioned this statistic as being
artificially inflated.
13Marriage
- The age at first marriage is increasing Median
age was 28.4 for men and 24.3 for women in 2005,
up by 2.5 for men and 1.7 for women since 1990. - The number of women under 25 who live with a
partner without any sort of marriage registration
increased from 11.4 in 1997 to 36.7 in 2006,
while the number of men in this category changed
from 7.6 in 1997 to 26.7 in 2006.

14Church and Marriage
- The green shows the number of church marriages,
while the yellow shows the number of registered
marriages. - The number of church marriages is high in the
20-29 categories, whereas older people tend to
have a registered marriage, but not a church one.
- The tendency for increased religiosity might
lead to more church marriages, which in turn
might lead to less registered marriages.
