Flattery Gossip Whispering Grumbling
Lying Cursing Casual Oaths Angry Words
4The Tongue
One day well stand before God and give an
account of every careless word weve spoken.
Matthew 1236-37 But I say to you that for every
idle word men may speak, they will give account
of it in the day of judgment. For by your words
you will be justified, and by your words you will
be condemned.
5The Tongue
Why is this so? Because what comes out of the
mouth comes from the heart.
Matthew 1518-19 But those things which proceed
out of the mouth come from the heart, and they
defile a man. For out of the heart proceed evil
thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications,
thefts, false witness, blasphemies....
6Christians Are To Speak Differently
- Ephesians 429
- Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth,
but what is good for necessary edification, that
it may impart grace to the hearers.
7Christians Are To Speak Differently
- Colossians 46
- Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned
with salt, that you may know how you ought to
answer each one.
8Christians Are To Speak Differently
- 1 Timothy 412
- Let no one despise your youth, but be an example
to the believers in word, in conduct, in love, in
spirit, in faith, in purity.
9Christians Are To Speak Differently
- Matthew 513-16
- You are the salt of the earth.
- You are the light of the world.
- Let your light shine before men in such a way
that they may see your good works, and glorify
your Father who is in heaven.
10The Tongue
2 Corinthians 1220 For I fear lest, when I
come, I shall not find you such as I wish,
and that I shall be found by you such as you do
not wish lest there be contentions, jealousies,
outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions,
backbitings, whisperings, conceits, tumults...
11The Tongue
Romans 128-31 God gave them over to a debased
mind, to do those things which are not
fitting being filled with all unrighteousness,
sexual immorality, wickedness, covetousness,
maliciousness full of envy, murder, strife,
deceit, evil-mindedness they are whisperers.
backbiters, haters of God, violent, proud,
boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient
to parents, undiscerning, untrustworthy,
unloving, unforgiving, unmerciful...
12The Tongue
A. B. Simpson once wrote Id rather play with
lightning than speak a reckless word against a
servant of Christ.
13The Tongue
Proverbs 616-19 (NKJV) These six things the
Lord hates, Yes, seven are an abomination to Him
A proud look, a lying tongue, hands that shed
innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked
plans, feet that are swift in running to evil, a
false witness who speaks lies, and one who sows
discord among brethren.
14I. Its Great Influence
- James 33-5 (NKJV)
- Indeed, we put bits in horses mouths that they
may obey us, and we turn their whole body. Look
also at ships although they are so large and are
driven by fierce winds, they are turned by a very
small rudder wherever the pilot desires. Even so
the tongue is a little member and boasts great
things. See how great a forest a little fire
kindles!
15I. Its Great Influence
- Three illustrations of small items that
yield great influence - A small metal bar in a horse's mouth is able to
control that large, muscular animal. - Likewise, a small rudder can turn a giant ship
even in the midst of a storm. - One small bit of a word can often control the
destiny of a man, a program of work, or even a
congregation of the Lord's church.
16I. Its Great Influence
- Three illustrations of small items that
yield great influence - Behold how great a matter a little fire
kindleth. - In 1871 in Chicago a cow kicked over a lantern
and started some hay on fire. 250 people were
killed and 17,450 buildings were destroyed.
17II. Its Great Iniquity
- James 36-8 (NKJV)
- And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity.
The tongue is so set among our members that it
defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the
course of nature and it is set on fire by
hell. For every kind of beast and bird, of
reptile and creature of the sea, is tamed and has
been tamed by mankind. But no man can tame the
tongue. It is an unruly evil, full of deadly
poison.
18III. Its Great Inconsistency
- James 39-12 (NKJV)
- With it we bless our God and Father, and with it
we curse men, who have been made in the
similitude of God. Out of the same mouth proceed
blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things
ought not to be so. Does a spring send forth
fresh water and bitter from the same opening? Can
a fig tree, my brethren, bear olives, or a
grapevine bear figs? Thus no spring yields both
salt water and fresh.

- To whom we say it
45I. Its Great Influence
- In one congregation a preacher labored for more
than 5 years and was doing a great work --- one
day he said something that offended a lady. With
her tongue, she started a mud-slide toward that
preacher and his family that within six weeks
drove him clear out of the state! - That was nearly 15 years ago. The congregation
has had a series of preachers since then, but
because of the animosity developed by that
incident, none have stayed over two years. The
congregation has since split, and today is barely
existing in an atmosphere of brotherly
skepticism ... not conducive for growth. - A strong foothold for the gospel was destroyed,
and it can all be traced back to an unbridled
tongue!
46Some Results of Whispering
- Can destroy a persons good name Prov. 221
A woman was guilty of gossiping about her
preacher. She was convicted of sin and went to
him to apologize and try to make restitution for
her wrongdoing. The preacher graciously accepted
her apology and then told her that if she wanted
to make it right, she should take a chicken, kill
it, pluck it, carry its feathers to the top of
the highest building in town and cast its
feathers to the four winds. She carried out his
directive and returned to him. He looked at her
and said, Now go and collect every one of those
feathers. She replied in horror, That is
impossible! He said, So is it impossible or you
to take back all those things you have said about
me.
