Background
  • Project started in 2005
  • Funded by Hampshire Learning Disability
    Partnership Board
  • April 2007 Extended to cover all of Hampshire,
    adults and children
  • Different projects in Portsmouth and Southampton

  • Talked to community groups
  • Listened to views and comments
  • Supported individuals and families
  • Cultural Awareness Training
  • Subgroup
  • Community Tree
  • Networks
  • Leaflet, poster and film

People told me
  • They did not understand the words learning
    disability
  • They did not know support services existed
  • Care in the family is best but support would be
    welcomed
  • Continuity of care is very important
  • Family would want reassurance that they wont be
    forgotten if individual gains more independence

Also
  • Work and getting a job is important
  • Marriage is important
  • They like to have information in their own
    language especially if someone explains it
    verbally to them
  • Some did not understand why there were fewer
    special facilities
  • They felt isolated, even in their own community

Hampshire Statistics
  • 6.34 of pupils come from ethnic minority
    background
  • 255 em pupils(5.4 of statemented) have a
    statement 508 (10.7)no ethnicity recorded
  • 5 most requested languages (2008) Nepali,
    Polish, Chinese (Cantonese and Mandarin), French,
    Urdu
  • North of County many new comers from Nepal, but
    settling South too. No specific concentrations
  • Travellers biggest group (2001 census), followed
    by White other. Of non white groups, Asian or
    Asian British is biggest
  • Relative high incidence of statements amongst
    Travellers population
  • Very few organised groups except in Portsmouth
    and Southampton

Rajs story
  • Arrived in Hampshire 2006, aged 15
  • Attended special school, family not aware of any
    transition planning
  • Now attends college, on a Skills for Life course
  • Did not know other courses might be available
  • Feels frustrated
  • Family does not know who to turn to for advice,
    is confused by the role of the different
    professionals
