Move To MAJCOMs
  • In 1990 the Air Force moved from three commands
    of SAC, TAC, MAC, to our present system of
    MAJCOMs
  • A better system was required for utilizing
    Americas Air Forces
  • The Air Force split into 9 MAJCOMs which created
    simplicity in organization
  • Changes were also needed for the smaller scale

A Need To Change?
  • Are we organized and prepared as well as we could
    be for the expeditionary world?
  • Are todays maintainers trained to handle some of
    our aging weapon systems?
  • If trends continue, are we going into massive
    tent cities on bare or ill-prepared bases with
    support personnel incorrectly trained?

Reasons For Change
  • The need for smaller deployable groups
  • Training personnel for the CORRECT job
  • Mission support was needed in greater proportions
  • Sustaining the force to fly and fixing weapon
    systems (especially old ones) were priority

Personnel had to work with aging weapon systems
  • And new weapon systems in a new age

  • Structured into four groups
  • Operations Group
  • Maintenance Group
  • Mission Support Group
  • Medical Group

314th Airlift Wing

Operations (Ops) Group
  • Continued focus on the skill of tactical
    employment of our Air Force
  • Encompasses planning, training and employment of
    our weapon systems
  • Does the flying aspect of the Air Forces mission

  • 53rd Airlift Squadron
  • 62nd Airlift Squadron
  • 314th Operational Support Squadron
  • 45th Airlift Squadron (Keesler AFB, MS)

Maintenance Group
  • Performs the maintenance of the aging aircraft
    fleet to produce sorties at designated rates
  • Units in maintenance group are still affiliated
    with specific operational squadrons
  • Deploy with specific squadron and interact with
    those squadrons on a day to day basis

314th Maintenance Group
  • Each operational squadron has its own maintenance
    personnel
  • These include and are not limited to munitions,
    component and equipment maintenance
  • Deploys with the operational squadron

Mission Support Group
  • Works to sustain home base capabilities
  • Rapidly employs our weapon systems and
    establishes our operational presence anywhere in
    the world
  • Includes, but not limited to communications,
    force protection, personnel readiness, and
    contingency bed down

Medical Group
  • No new changes were implemented to the Med Group
    when the other groups were organized
  • The Med Group still cares for the health and
    dental needs of an Air Force Installation
  • Med Group deployments are being worked out for
    later usage

  • The facilities were downsized in recent years to
    make the 314ths Med Group a clinic
  • The facilities still include dental as well as a
    functioning medical clinic, but no emergency
    facilities

  • Today I have briefed you about the changes to the
    Air Force Wing and used Little Rock Air Force
    Bases 314th Airlift Wing as my example.
  • These changes are important to the Air Force as
    we move from a stationary Air Force into an
    expeditionary Aerospace Force
