11Calming the Frenzy
- Movement in the country
- Some colleges do not require test scores
- College is not the end result but an important
fit to begin the next phase - Apply broadly
- Apply to colleges that meet individual needs
- More colleges in country admit most students than
are highly selective
12Parent and Student Challenges
- Look at colleges other than the same ones
everyone talks about - Dont talk about where your kids are applying or
their GPA or scores - Dont place value on your parenting according to
where you kids go to college - Take a good hard look at CSU and their programs
also consider the community college
13How to help your son or daughter find the right
school
- Do I want to commute or live on campus?
- Do I want to attend college in a city or in a
small college town? - In what area of the country would I like to
attend college? - What size college appeals to me?
- Small up to 5000 students
- Medium 5000-15,000 students
- Large over 15,000 students
- Several campuses are near or over 30,000
14Choosing a College
- What kind of weather do I prefer?
- Would I prefer a single-sex or coed college?
- Does fraternity or sorority life interest me?
- Do I want to participate in extracurricular
activities? - Do I want an extensive athletic program?
- Do I want a strong creative arts program?
- Do I want an academically demanding environment,
with a curriculum that allows for independent
projects?
15Choosing a College
- Would I want to participate in an off campus
internship? - Will my family be able to support my college
cost? - Would I be willing to work part time while I
attend college? - Do I want to spend part of my college years
studying in another country?

19Send Scores
- Students must send official scores to each
university to which they apply - CSU can send SAT to csumentor 3594 for all
CSU / ACT score manager - Colleges use students best scores
- Not having scores holds up the process biggest
factor in not being eligible is not sending
scores
20Score Choice
- The College Board offers score choice send only
the scores you request. ACT offers this as well - Colleges use a students best scores when
determining eligibility sending all scores does
not put the student at disadvantage and some
schools prefer having all the scores
21Budget
- Budget factors continue to effect higher
education in California - Community colleges take all applicants,
enrollment is high so classes are more difficult
to get - UC has raised fees and is deciding on another fee
increase - CSU has more impacted campuses than in the past
due to enrollment decreases, however, there are
campuses with room
22California Community College Requirements
- 18 years of age OR
- High school graduate OR
- California High School Proficiency Exam OR
- General Equivalency Diploma (GED)
23The Transfer Process
- The California Master Plan for Education states
that PRIORITY must be given at the junior year
for those students coming from the California
Community College System. There is a specific
plan of courses detailed in the Transfer Center
at all 109 California Community Colleges
detailing the transfer process.
24A Note on Transfer Students
- More than 90 of all transfer students offered
admission are California Community College
students - UC must maintain at 60 / 40 student ratio
- 7 UC campuses offer transfer admission guarantees
as do many CSU campuses - Admit rates for students applying to UC campuses
are better for junior transfers than freshmen - One-third of UC bachelors degrees awarded each
year go to transfer students - Graduation rates Freshmen 81.4 / Transfers
85.5
25Transfer Admission Guarantee
- A Transfer Admission Guarantee (TAG) is a formal,
written agreement that outlines the CC courses
you must complete before transferring to a
participating institution. Upon completion of TAG
requirements, transfer admission is guaranteed.
NOTE. A TAG is not required for transfer.
However, it guarantees admission upon completion
of all general education and major required
coursework.
26Transfer Admission Guarantee
- A TAG may be written after you have completed at
least 30 semester units of transferable
coursework, and may be written up to one year
before transfer. Contact the counselor as soon as
you start Community College to begin planning. - See any Community College Transfer Center or web
site for information about TAG. - http//www.uctransfer.org/transfer_admis_guar.html
- UCs site outlining TAG
27Eligibility vs. Selection
- Eligibility refers to the minimum requirements
needed to be considered for freshmen admission - Selection refers to a process used to select
students for admission when a campus cannot admit
all UC/CSU eligible applicants
28University of California California State
UniversitySubject Requirements

39Private and Out of State Schools
- Private
- Admission requirements vary campus to campus
- Selectivity varies campus to campus
- Students must obtain their own applications and
be aware of deadlines at each campus - Common Application can used for member schools
- Letters of recommendation may be required, give
one month notice school web page for info. - Financial Aid may be available from university
- Some will waive application fees
- Out of State
- Each state has a two tiered system (University of
Arizona and Arizona State) - Priority is given to state residents
40How Many?
- Three broad categories to be considered
- Reach
- most selective, possibly first choice campus

varied - Safety schools are important
- UC Merced growing all eligible
- San Francisco State University (local area guar.)
- California State University, East Bay and several
other CSU campuses
43Colleges will not text students!
- Colleges communicate with students via email
most all set up portals for students to verify
status of application, what might be missing,
admission status - Students need to have an email address and check
portal regularly as to not miss deadlines and
important information! - Students should consider opening an email account
just for college using an appropriate name
44College Admission Mistakes
