10GPS
Global Positioning System (GPS) is currently the
only fully functional Global Navigation Satellite
System (GNSS).
Transmit signals that indicate positioning. Used
for navigation, map-making, and land
surveying. Also provides time reference
11Global Positioning System (GPS)
A constellation of 27 Earth-orbiting satellites
(24 in operation and three extras in case one
fails). Developed and implemented this
satellite network by U.S. Military
NAVSTAR GPS satellite
12In order for a GPS device to find a location,
there needs to be three satellites to pin-point
the spot. The combination of the three
satellites working together is called
triangulation.
13Global Positioning System (GPS)
- Circles the globe at about 12,000 miles (19,300
km) - 2 complete rotations every day
- At least four satellites "visible" in the sky.
Find location through a mathematical principle
called trilateration.
