Challenges

• The challenges of using an XML-schema and
  applying it to a media-rich teaching module
• For the basic SIMM, these schemas work quite well
• Hierarchical narrative form mirrors XML
• Defines structure, not function
• New features mean new requirements
• Directory structure, media types are external to
  the schema

• Assessment
• Heterogeneous, complex
• Inter-institution variability
• Much of the metadata stays on the database and is
  not represented in the XML
• XSLT poses technical challenges

• What steps are necessary to get XML-based data
  into existing medical school's IT environment -
  since not many have an LMS which is
  standards-based?
• Cultural changes
• Faculty/student motivation
• Open-source projects (i.e. TUSK, Sakai)
• An availability of XML-based data!
• Compelling content
• Incentives to share

• Virtual patient cases are extremely diverse
• Local use may differ among institutions
• Types, functionality of virtual patients still
  evolving
