ADAPs Mission
  • We advance the viability and security of Pacific
    island agriculture and communities through
    collaborative programs that are culturally
    appropriate, socially acceptable, economically
    viable, and environmentally sustainable.

What is ADAP?
  • Founded in 1988 by the deans and directors of the
    5 Pacific Land Grants
  • Funded by Congressional earmark via USDA-CSREES
  • Working on issues common to at least 2 ADAP
    institutions

  • The Pacific Land Grant consortium
  • Collaborative,
  • Sum greater than parts
  • State, Territory and 3 countries
  • 1862s but admitted between 1959 and 1982.
  • Research intensive to community colleges

  • Island communities
  • less educational infrastructure

  • 21 attendees of ESCOP/ACOP, LEAD21
  • Articulation support for regional students at
    University of Guam - Pohnpei Accord
  • Grant reconnaissance and advising
  • Library services
  • UHs library is gathering point for researchers
    in the region

  • Seed funding projects that can sustain themselves
  • Healthy Living in the Pacific Islands
  • Network of health scientists and educators
    working to reduce chronic food/exercise-related
    problems
  • Received funds from USDA-CSREES-NRI, State of
    Hawaii funds
  • Avian Influenza Field Training for Pacific
    Islands
  • Only a small amount of ADAP funding put in, but
    our consortium allowed us to tap into Health and
    Human Services funds (110,000) to provide a
    leading-edge training

  • Seed funding projects that can sustain themselves
  • Pacific Islands Distance Diagnostics
    Recommendation System (PIDDRS)
  • Network of diagnostics software diagnosticians
  • Now paid-for by the Western Plant Diagnostic
    Network
  • Para-veterinary training
  • Performed a needs assessment with regional
    partners
  • Only dozens of veterinarians in the Pacific -
    need junior vets
  • Joint project with the Secretariat of the Pacific
    Community (Fiji) and the University of the South
    Pacific (Samoa)
  • Now funded by AUS-aid, NZ-aid, Taiwan

And, now we want to join with Alaska to make our
consortium even stronger

  • Global Warming
  • The Pacific Land Grants, including Alaska,
    understand that these issues can most effectively
    addressed by pooling its human and fiscal
    resources together. We also understand that
    solutions for the region may differ significantly
    those of the contiguous United States.
