  • Involves the unauthorized use of a victims
    personal identity or identifying information for
    criminal purposes.
  • Such identifying information includes a persons
    social security number, date of birth, mothers
    maiden name, account numbers, addresses

  • It makes other crimes easier to commit.
  • It is rarely the sole objective of the crime.

  • Estimated 47 Billion per year.
  • Take out credit card fraud and its still almost

Who are the victims???

Two types of financial IDT(1) Account Takeovers
  • Criminal assumes control of the victims existing
    accounts by
  • Filing a change of address with issuers or post
    office to divert correspondence to commercial
    mail receiving agencies, vacant apartments, or
    other mail drops.
  • Requesting the issuance of new credit
    cards/checks (either duplicate or adding
    authorized user).

(2) New Accounts Fraud
  • Victims identifying information is used to open
    new accounts by the identity thief.
  • Far more difficult to detect.
  • Can cause more damage in the long run.

Preventing Theft of Your Identity

Minimize your risk!
  • Before providing personal identifiers, know how
    it will be used and if it will be shared.
  • Know your billing cycles and contact creditors
    when bills fail to show up.
  • Place outgoing mail in collection boxes or the
    U.S. Post Office.
  • Only carry essential identification cards.

  • Do not give personal info over the phone.
  • Do not discard documents that contain personal
    identifiers or account info.
  • Order copies of your credit report once a year.

  • Credit denied.
  • Routine financial statements stop arriving in a
    timely manner.
  • Receive phone calls from creditors on
    unrecognized accounts.

  • Step One Contact the fraud department for the
    three major credit bureaus

  • Step two Contact the account issuer in question
  • Ask for the fraud/security department of the
    compromised or fraudulent account issuer.
  • Notify them by phone and in writing.
  • Close all tampered or fraudulent accounts.
  • Ask about secondary cards.

  • Third Step Contact your local police department
  • Notify the police department in the community
    where the ID Theft occurred.
  • Obtain copies of all police reports made.

  • Keep a detailed log of all contacts
  • Location called.
  • Name of person(s) you spoke to
  • Title and call back number with ext.
  • Ask and write down what the procedures are for
    that entity.

  • Identity Theft Penalty Enhancement Act
  • Two year enhancement
  • Sentences run consecutively
  • Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions (FACT) Act
  • Empowers LE to gain information and protects
    consumers safeguard consumers information i.e.
    disposal and last 5 digits of ssan.
  • Empowers consumers to clean up the credit BUT
    YOU NEED A POLICE REPORT.
