• I have just invaded England and defeated
  Harold at the battle of Hastings. I need to
  control the important parts of England,
  especially the towns. I am worried that the
  English will attack and take back these towns
  unless I do something. What can I do?

• I suggest that in order to control England you
  build castles in important places all over the
  country. To do this quickly I would build wooden
  motte and bailey castles.

• I want to be able to reward my loyal Norman
  Nobles who helped me to conquer England. I also
  need strong knights to help me put down all these
  threats to my rule. What can I do?

• I suggest that in order to do this you
  introduce the Feudal System. In this system you
  give out land to rich Norman nobles. In return
  they promise to be loyal to you and give you
  knights when you need them.

• In order to pay for the castles you suggested
  and to pay wages to all the knights I need, I
  will have to raise taxes off everyone in the
  country. How can I make sure that everyone pays
  their taxes?

• I suggest that you do a survey to find out what
  everyone in England owns and then how much they
  will have to pay. You could use your knights to
  do this, who could threaten to kill anyone who
  does not take part in the survey. This
  information could be recorded in a huge book.
