Week Four Citations and Databases

Citation Hints
  • Things To Look Out For
  • Format? Every format has a slightly different
style for citation. Make sure youre correct.
  • If you have a periodical of some kind, is it a
    magazine, journal or a newspaper?
  • Is your article full text or not? Full text
article citations are slightly different than
    those that are print only.

5
Periodical Indexes
  • Help us find articles in magazines, journals and
newspapers. They can be general or specialized,
and they come in different formats such as print,
    electronic, or microfilm
  • Whatever the details, indexes all share the same
purpose, which is to help users find articles on
a particular topic, articles by a particular
author, or articles about another publication
such as reviews, criticism or analysis

6
Periodical Indexes Three Types
  • General Index Directory of articles covering
    multiple topics
  • Magazine Index Directory of every article
published in that periodical for the covered
    period
  • Subject Index Directory of articles covering a
particular topic or field, such as engineering or
    nursing

7
Examples of Indexes
  • Old fashioned card catalog
  • Your moms recipe file
  • OSUs Library Catalog
  • Back of reference books
  • Electronic databases such as ProQuest, Psych Info
    and Newspaper Source

8
Dont Dismiss The Print
  • What if
  • We lose our connection to the databases and you
have a paper due before we get them back?
  • The information you need goes back so far that
our electronic databases dont cover it?
  • The electronic version of the database you need
is just too expensive for the library youre
    using?
