Characteristics of IL 11

• Is a non-glycosylated protein of about 179AAs
• MW of about 23 kDa.
• IL 11 genes contains five exons

Interleukin 11

• It is secreted by the bone marrow stromal cells
• Produced also by a number of mesenchymal cells.

Biological functions

• It supports growth in plasmacytoma
• It promotes the differentiation of progenitor B
  cells
• It also promotes the differentiation of
  megakaryocytes.
• It induces the synthesis of acute phase proteins
  from the hepatocytes.
• It inhibits the differentiation of preadipocytes

IL 11 receptors

• Belongs to the class I cytokine receptor family.
  
• NOTE Most of the cytokine-binding receptors
  that function in the immune and hematopoietic
  system belong to the class I cytokine receptor
  family.

IL 11 in disease

• Overexpression of IL 11 - loss of body fat,
  thymus atrophy
• -alterations in plasma protein levels
• Inflammation of the eyelids
• hyperactive state.

IL 11

• Prevents cell death by apoptosis.
• Accelerates recovery of small intestinal mucosa
  in mice treated with combined chemotherapy and
  radiation.
