Title: The greatest warriors of ancient Greece were the Spartans' They were descendants of the Dorian invad

1
  • The greatest warriors of ancient Greece were the
Spartans. They were descendants of the Dorian
invaders who had conquered Greece in 1100 B.C.

2
  • The Spartans controlled the southern portion of
Greece known as the Peloponnesus and created a
powerful military state respected throughout the
    Mediterranean World.

3
  • Most of the daily work in ancient Sparta was
conducted by state owned serfs called Helots.

4
  • The Helots vastly outnumbered the 10,000 Spartan
citizens, thus, a strict military state was
created to keep order. These Helots were the
original inhabitants of southern Greece and
accounted for well over Half of all people living
in the area. In fact, of the 375,000 people
living in Sparta, only 10,000 were treated as
    citizens. (2.6)

5
  • The government was a military dictatorship
founded by Lycurgus who wanted to create an army
strong enough to defeat all enemies.

6
  • All male citizens over 30 were members of the
Assembly which discussed and voted on all
    important matters.

7
  • Real political power was held by five men called
Ephors who were responsible for the day to day
    administration of the city-state, commanded
armies, judged laws, and dealt with foreign
    powers.

8
  • The Ephors were assisted by a group of thirty men
over the age of 60 who did much of the daily
    functions of government.
  • These men were known as The Elders

9
  • Children of Sparta did without luxury and lived a
tough active life (sickly children were abandoned
    at birth).

10
  • At seven males lived away from home and by age 20
they were trained warriors. At 30 they could
marry and enter into the government.

11
  • Spartan women were educated at home. Education
and motherhood were stressed for women. They were
also expected to be in good physical condition to
    help them in childbirth.

12
  • Men married at the age of 30,while women married
    at the age of 20.

13
  • Spartan women held the highest status of any
Greek women. They could inherit property and pass
it on to their children. They also controlled
over ½ of all the wealth in Sparta. (Because
they often inherited property from men killed in
    battle.)

14
  • The Spartans isolated themselves from other
Greeks. They looked down on trade, forbade their
citizens to travel, had little use for arts and
even used iron coins instead of gold and silver.
