Title: Hurricane Andrew

1
Hurricane Andrew
  • By Steven Duke

2
Weather conditions
  • One weather condition necessary to form is warn
water. If the water was cold, one would not form
  • Another is the wind. Moist air is like fuel for a
hurricane. Winds are very high, reaching around
200mph. But not the highest that there can be.
The speed is only bested by a tornado.
  • The winds of hurricane Andrew are not known
because all of the equipment used to track it,
    was destroyed.

3
Tools and Methods for Tracking
  • There are many ways to track hurricanes. One way
is by satellite imagery. The way that works is a
satellite in space will track every move of the
    hurricane with pictures.
  • Another is by Reconnaissance Aircraft (storm
chasers for hurricanes). They are an advanced
military aircraft made it possible to gather data
    in a new way.
  • They are also gather info. About hurricanes with
dropsonde. They are like the little sensors used
in the movie Twister and do the same things as
    those sensors.

4
Effects
  • Years after Andrew hit land, many people in
Florida reported symptoms of mental distress.
  • Some medical doctors say it is common for this to
occur, just like it is for men and women in the
war. The term for this is post traumatic stress
    syndrome.
  • Other effects include water and wind damage. They
are two of the worst examples of aftermath from
    this strong of a storm.

5
Precautions
  • Plan an escape route.
  • Stock plywood and materials you may need to board
    up windows before you leave.
  • Move garbage cans and other large objects inside
    the house or garage.
  • Secure boats and cars left behind.
  • A three day supply of water (one gallon per
    person per day)
  • Non-perishable food and snacks
  • One change of clothes and one sleeping bag and
    blanket for each person
  • Medications
  • A first aid kit
  • Battery-powered radio, flashlight and plenty of
    extra batteries
  • Special items for infants or the elderly
  • Quiet games, books and cards
