End of the Guptas

• By 500 C.E., the Gupta Empire was weakened by a
  series of ineffectual rulers.
• Like the empires of Rome and the Han, invaders
  took advantage of the internal weaknesses of the
  Gupta.
• The Hephthalite King Oprah successfully attacked
  the northwest borders of the Gupta Empire.
• The Hephthalite of central Asia was part of a
  group of nomadic invaders often referred to as
  the Huna or HUN.
• The Huna themselves were eventually conquered by
  the Sassanids.

Rajput

• Many of the invaders into the Gupta Empire
  integrated into Hindu society and became part of
  the Kshatriya caste of warriors.
• As the Guptas declined in power, the regional
  warrior princes developed the military power of
  their small individual states. RAJPUT
• This division of India into separate states
  allowed the Muslim invaders to eventually control
  India.

• Despite political disunity, Hindu civilization
  continued and developed after the Gupta.
• Buddhism declined dramatically, while Hinduism
  was revitalized.
• A renewed attention to the mother goddess DEVI
  swept India.

Spread of Hinduism

• Hinduism spread throughout southeast Asia into
  Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Cambodia, Java, Laos, Burma
  and Thailand.
• In Cambodia a temple was built and dedicated to
  Shiva the temple at Angkor Wat was later taken
  over by the Buddhists.

Polynesia

• By 1000 B.C.E., there was a migration of people
  to the islands of the south Pacific POLYNESIA
  many islands
• Migrating by canoe, these agricultural based
  people developed cultures in relative isolation
  on islands such as Fiji, Samoa, and eventually
  Hawaii.
• In Hawaii, the people developed a caste society
  with powerful monarchs.
