28Reflections
- In the beginning of this project I had
already decided that the suburban school library
media center would be state of the art, close to
perfect. I chose the Equity project because I
wanted to visit a LMC with new furnishings, plush
carpeting, plenty of books, new computers, and
great design, etc. I already have some
experience in urban school library media centers
and I remember working in a school district where
the budget was tight. one learns how to make the
most of every resource when you have to. I have
vivid memories of receiving countless catalogs
from Follett, Demco, Highsmith, Brodart, FS
School supplies, and so on. When I looked
through the catalogs I would plan and imagine a
day when I would be able to buy plenty of needed
and wanted materials. After doing this project
and looking at the numbers I discovered that
Hadley Watts and Fairview are not equal but the
numbers do not tell the whole story. When
looking at the facilities, both schools have
carpeting, attractive displays, some up-to-date
books, and solid wood furnishings. Like Hadley
Watts, Fairview has a large inviting circulation
desk. It was interesting to note that Fairview
has 4 more computers (14) than Hadley Watts (10.)
Also Fairview LMC is larger with two office
areas. Even though Fairviews library media
center is 11 years older than Hadley Watts, the
library media specialist has decorated the space
in order to give it a comfortable and functional
appeal. Both LMC have what I feel is high on the
priority list, a certified library media
specialist. I thoroughly enjoyed interviewing
both library media specialists. Mrs. Spring,
from Fairview has a lot of experience and wisdom.
She told me about the many different changes in
library media through the years. She is new to
Fairview but has worked in several library media
centers in Dayton Public schools. Mrs. Thompson,
from Hadley Watts, is in her 4th year as library
media specialist with Centerville City schools.
She was very organized and professional. The
parents at Hadley Watts Middle school who
volunteer in the library allow Mrs. Thompson the
time to plan, schedule, and instruct. Mrs.
Spring is very appreciative of her parent
volunteer this year. The parent volunteer helps
with displays, RIF book events, book fairs, etc. - ,
- If believe that regardless of the budget
and socioeconomic challenges that face the urban
LMC, a dedicated library media specialist has to
be a teacher, instructional partner, information
specialist, and program administrator.
