Problem

• Can steam power a home-made boat to move on water?

Hypothesis
We believe that with enough heated water creating
steam, the boat will be able to move on the water

Procedure

• Materials
• 1 metal clothes hanger
• 2 tea lights
• Double sided tape
• 3 nails
• 4 by 8 pine wood
• Matches
• Metal cigar tube with cork

Steps

• Step 1
• We bought wood and sawed a 4 by 8 inch boat. Dad
  marked it 1 inch in and I hammered one nail on
  each mark he made.

• Step 2
• Dad hammered a nail into the cork to make a hole
  for the steam to come out.
• He and mom bent and wrapped 2 18 inch pieces of
  wire from the hanger around the ends of the tube
  and twisted them together.

Step 3
Mom gave me 2 tea lights and some double-sided
tape and I put some under each candle to hold it
to the wood. Dad marked an x on each spot for me
to place the candles.

Step 4

• We went outside with an empty plastic bin and
  filled it with water. We removed the cork and
  filled the tube with hot water.
• We replaced the cork tightly and put the boat in
  the water.
• We lit the tea lights and timed how long it took
  for the tube to blow the steam and move the boat.

Do You Think steam could move the boat?

Conclusion

• The hot water and candles made the water in the
  tube boil causing steam to escape and push the
  boat forward.
• This proved that my hypothesis was correct.
