Railroad pioneer Charles Crocker builds the
Worlds Most Elegant Seaside Resort
1879 - Southern Pacific builds standard gauge
rail line to Monterey. Work begins on Hotel Del
Monte a.k.a. Crockers Folly. Architect Arthur
Brown, Sr. 1880 - Del Monte opens in June. All
rooms booked. Hotel must turn down 3,000
reservation requests in first month, reports net
profit of 4,000 in first two weeks and over
11,000 in first six weeks.

to their guests every whim with the usual aplomb.
