- SOCCR Approach
- Integrated content not just natural carbon
cycle - Community document- written by leading
scientific experts (50 or more involved) - Involve authors and stakeholders from United
States, Canada and Mexico - Stakeholder participation very early on
- and at points
- where input can
- make a difference
- Provide opportunity
- for direct
- author-stakeholder interaction but
responsibility for content lies with authors - Document intended for decision maker audience-
attention to length and style
What is the SOCCR? This State of the Carbon Cycle
Report (SOCCR) is envisioned as the first in a
series of comprehensive and informative reports
about the status and trends of carbon emissions,
sequestration, and the functioning of the carbon
cycle. The first SOCCR focuses on the carbon
budget of North America. The two broad
objectives for SOCCR are 1) to summarize
scientific knowledge about carbon cycle
properties and changes, and 2) to provide
scientific information for decision support and
policy formulation concerning carbon.
Draft SOCCR Chapters Executive Summary Part I
The Carbon Cycle in North America 1. What is the
carbon cycle and why do we care? 2. The carbon
cycle of North America in a global context 3.
The North American carbon budget past and
present 4. What are the options and measures
that can significantly affect the carbon
cycle? 5. How can we improve the application of
scientific information to decision support? Part
II Energy, Industry and Waste Management
Activities 6. Energy extraction and
conversion 7. Transportation 8. Industry and
waste management 9. Buildings Part III Land and
Water Systems 10. Agricultural lands,
grasslands, shrublands and arid lands 11. North
American forests 12. Carbon cycles in the
permafrost regions of North America 13.
Wetlands 14. Human settlements 15. Coastal
oceans, lakes and rivers
The SOCCR will be released as Synthesis and
Assessment Product 2.2 of the Climate Change
Science Program.
