    beginning)
  • Studied art at Academy of San Carlos in Mexico
    City since he was 10 years old.
  • So good, he was sponsored by the governor of
    Veracruz to study in Europe.
  • Studied cubism with Picasso and Braque in Europe
  • Gradually shifted to Post-Impressionism

  • Contracted polio at age 6 (made one of her legs
    thinner than the other so she always wore long
    skirts)

  • Frida grew up during the Mexican Revolution

    her and her sister from gunfire
  • Enrolled in a Prep school that contained only 35
    girls.
  • Joined a gang and fell in love with the leader

Trauma
  • 1925involved in a horrible accident on a bus
    that collided with a trolley car
  • She suffered serious injuries in the accident,
    including a broken spinal column, a broken
    collarbone, broken ribs, a broken pelvis, eleven
    fractures in her right leg, a crushed and
    dislocated right foot, and a dislocated shoulder.
    An iron handrail impaled her abdomen.

Recuperating
  • While recovering, Frida painted to pass the time
  • Mostly self portraits
  • "I paint myself because I am often alone and I am
    the subject I know best"
  • Gave up studying medicine to become a painter
