Title: Lesson 24 What can we get from the rocks

1
Lesson - 24 What can we get from the rocks ?
  • What are the differences among rock, stone and
    mineral ?
  • How many common rock types are there ?
  • Could you give some examples of rocks of each
    rock type?
  • Could you give some example of minerals ?
  • Could you give some examples of ores ?
  • How are metals (minerals), in general, be
    obtained (extracted) from ores ?

2
What are the differences among rock, stone and
mineral ?
  • Rock a solid mass of mineral or a mixture of
minerals forming the earth crust (usually a
    mixture).
  • Stone a small piece of rock (usually a
    mixture).
  • Mineral a naturally occurring solid with a
    definite crystalline structure and chemical
composition (i.e. an element or a compound)

3
How many common rock types are there ?
  • Sedimentary rocks formed by sedimentation of
minerals, remains of plant and animal or other
    precipitate.
  • Igneous rocks formed from cooling of molten
    rock.
  • Metamorphic rocks formed from sedimentary or
igneous rock under heat and / or pressure.

4
Could you give some examples of rocks of each
rock type?
  • Sedimentary rocks
  • limestone, chalk, sandstone
  • Igneous rocks
  • granite, basalt
  • Metamorphic rocks
  • marble, slate

5
Could you give some example of minerals ?
  • Quartz silicon(IV) oxide, SiO2(s)
  • Rock salt sodium chloride, NaCl(s)
  • Graphite Carbon, C(graphite)
  • Diamond Carbon, C(diamond)
  • Gold Au(s)
  • Calcite Calcium carbonate, CaCO3(s)

6
Could you give some examples of ores ?
  • Ore rock / earth from which metal / mineral can
    be profitably extracted.
  • Bauxite mostly aluminium oxide, Al2O3(s)
  • Copper pyrite mostly copper iron sulphide,
    CuFeS2(s)
  • Haematite mostly iron(III) oxide, Fe2O3(s)
  • Galena mostly lead(II) sulphide, PbS(s)

7
How are metals (minerals), in general, be
obtained (extracted) from ores ?
  • Mining (digging up the ore) ? Concentration
(removing waste rock) ?Extraction (Removal of
    other mineral) ?Purification (Removal of
    remaining impurities)
