Title: 20092010 Yearbook Concept

1
2009/2010 Yearbook Concept
  • A magazine look

2
Colors
  • The specific formula colors have not been chosen,
but we will be using a green purple, blue, red,
    yellow, and orange
  • The cover will be green, purple, and blue
  • Faded versions of these colors are fine for the
    fill color on boxes
  • Opaque and transparent okay

3
Backgrounds
  • All backgrounds are to be white
  • They may be almost fully covered with boxes of
other colors but must be white to begin with
  • Do not add pattern to any backgrounds

4
Color Usage
  • White and black must be present on every page
  • You may use as many colors as you desire on any
    single page but remember
  • Balance is important
  • Generally four colors will be enough (not
    including white/black)
  • You need to use your own good judgment on whats
too much and whats too little
  • Colors must be blocked (see next slides for
    examples)

5
Literal blocking or grouping of colors
All blue
All pink
All green
All purple
All pink
All blue
6
Or the color use can be carried through the page
(see notes for explanation)
All typing within circles is black
All main titles are yellow while the rest are all
purple
All circles are white with purple rings around
them
7
Text
  • All small text should be in black or white for
visibilitys sake though you can use another
    color to highlight key information
  • All small text will also be required to be in a
uniform and readable font (will be decided upon
    soon)

8
  • We will be choosing 5 or so AWPC fonts for the
    pages as well
  • You may use as many of these fonts on a page as
you like but balance is important (see color tips)

Page Construction
  • Want information to be split up in boxes rather
than past years where copy and pictures covered
the whole page in a chunk
  • May do this with polls, special interviews,
    interesting info/fun facts, ect.

Breaks up page by adding a box that has an
experts tips on packing your own flight meal
10
  • May choose to angle a few photos or text boxes on
a page, but avoid extreme angles or tipping of
    pictures and overuse

These single pictures are angled just slightly to
add interest to the page
11
Elements of Design to Use
Circles (NOT ovals)- great way to highlight
subtitles or small pictures
Boxes- great for titles, subtitles, pictures ect.
Lines around some photos is great -need to have a
weight (thickness) of 2pt
12
Cool quotes in larger fonts are great on top of
pictures or pulled out in copy
Cutouts- focal point/giving a better look atop a
picture
13
Images w/o a background- great on a page by
themselves or as a n additional picture that adds
interest to the page
14
Tips to Remember
  • Remember that white space (white background of a
page that shows through) is important

White space
15
  • Eyeline is important too (line, implied or real,
that leads the readers eye through the page)
however a page can be created without it if all
    elements are balanced

16
General Design Tips
  • Its strongly suggested that you look at a
magazine and find a design that you think looks
good or would work well for you topic and then
tweak that page to fit into our yearbook
  • Remember these pages have to be looked at by guys
and girls so dont make them to frilly or too
    manly

17
  • The design plan was mostly comprised from the
style of People, Cosmo Girl, Seventeen, and
Sunset Magazines-they are great places to search
    out designs or further examples

18
Copy
  • Must interview people (not just your best
friends, but people whom are key in the topic of
    your page)
  • Ask deep questions and dig for great answers
this season was good is not an acceptable quote
  • Try to go beyond the general they had a great
season with many wins style writing
  • Try to make your copy unique to your page so
people actually can enjoy reading it
  • Needs to be long and have substance not just
    fillers

19
Copy/Page Conception
  • When designing a page be as creative as possible,
because this the book is to look like a magazine
every page can not be the usual copy and pictures
  • Information for a page can be conveyed in a
    nontraditional way

20
  • For example Seventeen and Elle Girl magazine has
a monthly workout in each issue. A great idea for
the PE class page would be to have each class
come up with a move related to what they do in
class. You could write up a description of how to
do the move and include a little info about the
class. You could then take pictures of the
students demonstrating the moves and finally make
    a really dynamic page.

21
  • Crosswords (the questions relate to the topic of
page and are clearly listed at the bottom of the
page with a short bio-see People Mag) and Spot
the Differences can make great pages too, you
just have to be creative and make sure you are
including info about the subject of your page
  • Quizzes or QAs with a team captain are some
    more ideas
  • Basically be stopped by nothing let your
    creative side loose

22
  • The editor have thought up some really creative
ideas for certain pages and will share them when
    students register for pages
  • If, when doing actual pages, you are stuck ask a
editor for help and they will help
  • Note that original pages will not neccesarily
have a traditional copy however you must still
do interviews for facts and report such matters
    on the page

23
Captions
  • Need to have first and last name of person as
    well as grade level
  • Captions are a great way to include information
that could not fit elsewhere on the page-use them
    well
  • Quotes from the subject of the picture are a
great way to use captions as well
  • DO NOT simply state the obvious (ie Jake is
running the mile on a picture of Jake running
    the mile.

24
This Assignment
  • You will create a mock page that has all the
    elements of a real page
  • You will need a sort of copy with evidence of an
    interview
  • You will need pictures complete with captions
  • You will need a solid design complete with colors
    and design elements

25
  • You do not actually have to talk to a person
related to the page you are doing or gather any
real facts, simply pretend you have
  • This needs to be an example of your very best
    work
  • If there is little visible effort put in the page
you may be dismissed from the yearbook advisory!

26
MISC
  • On real pages if you dont think your strong suit
is writing copy or taking pictures you can pair
up with another person who does excel in these
areas and create pages in this manner
  • This must be noted at the time of page
assignments and does not change deadlines or give
any slack pages still must be fully completed so
work out a schedule between each other

27
  • When doing real pages before you begin to design
a page you must have a plan pre-approved by the
editors (we will have form that you will fill
    off)
  • While making your page you will be required to
check off certain steps with multiple editors (we
    will go into specifics later)
  • You MUST meet All deadlines-no excuses!!!

28
  • More information will be coming you way soon and
this PowerPoint will be made even better with
    more tips and explanations
