3- Secondary-level education should provide
effective preparation for those proceeding to
academic or professional tertiary education as
well as for those entering the world of work
either as trainees, wage employees or as
self-employed entrepreneurs, while inculcating
the social skills for productive and peaceful
life in todays interdependent communities. Such
an education must necessarily comprise a
harmonious balance of academic disciplines,
general practical and social skills and civic

5What are the elements of the IBCC?
- Two Diploma Programme subjects one must be a
foreign language (Group 2) - A specially designed IBCC core recognising IB
values and the needs of vocational students
6The DP subjects
- The subjects taken can be at SL (including ab
initio for the foreign language subject) or HL
depending on student abilities and needs - Students whose mother tongue is not English can
take English as their foreign language - The second DP subject can be taken from any of
the approved subjects from any Hexagon core group - Pilot subjects and SBS subjects are not allowed
7The IBCC core
- A community and service program that emphasises
civic development, knowledge development, social
development and personal development - An approaches to learning course that emphasises
the development of thinking skills, perceptual
skills, communication skills and personal skills - A reflective project that emphasises the ethical
dimension of an issue associated with the
students career and technical education
8The future of the IBCC
- The current pilot runs until 2012
- Existing IBDP schools can apply to become IBCC
schools in early 2011 for first teaching in 2012 - Another pilot has been set up for schools that
wish to combine the IBCC with the Project Lead
The Way (PLTW) curriculum - Non IB schools will pilot the IBCC between
2011-2016 - Non IB schools can apply to become IBCC schools
in 2014 for first teaching in 2016
