Pouring Your Life
into Others
3
1. Jesus pours out His life for His disciples
by . . . a. teaching them b. living with
them c. serving them
After that, he poured water into a basin and
began to wash his disciples feet, drying them
with the towel that wrapped around him.
John 135
4
d. asking them to do the same for others
Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed
your feet, you also should wash one anothers
feet. I have set you an example that you should
do as I have done for you. I tell you the truth,
no servant is greater than his master, nor is a
messenger greater than the one who sent him.
Now that you know these things, you will be
blessed if you do them. John 1314-17
5
e. by dying for them
For there is one God and one mediator between God
and men, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself
as a ransom for all men the testimony given in
its proper time. 1 Timothy
25-6
This is my blood of the covenant, which is
poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.
Matthew 2628

e. by dying for them
I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays
down his life for the sheep.
John 1011
This is how we know what love is Jesus Christ
laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay
down our lives for our brothers.
1 John 316
7
You know how I lived the whole time I was with
you, from the first day I came into the province
of Asia. I served the Lord with great humility
and with tears, although I was severely tested by
the plots of the Jews. You know that I have not
hesitated to preach anything that would be
helpful to you but have taught you publicly and
from house to house. I have declared to both
Jews and Greeks that they must turn to God in
repentance and have faith in our Lord Jesus.
Acts 2018-35
8
And now, compelled by the Spirit, I am going
to Jerusalem, not knowing what will happen to me
there. I only know that in every city the Holy
Spirit warns me that prison and hardships are
facing me. However, I consider my life worth
nothing to me, if only I may finish the race and
complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me
the task of testifying to the gospel of Gods
grace.
Acts 2018-35
9
Now I know that none of you among whom I have
gone about preaching the kingdom will ever see me
again. Therefore, I declare to you today that I
am innocent of the blood of all men. For I have
not hesitated to proclaim to you the whole will
of God. Keep watch over yourselves and all the
flock of which the Holy Spirit has made you
overseers. Be shepherds of the church of God,
which he bought with his own blood.
Acts 2018-35
10
I know that after I leave, savage wolves will
come in among you and will not spare the flock.
Even from your own number men will arise and
distort the truth in order to draw away disciples
after them. So be on your guard! Remember that
for three years I never stopped warning each of
you night and day with tears.
Acts 2018-35
11
Now I commit you to God and to the word of his
grace, which can build you up and give you an
inheritance among all those who are sanctified.
I have not coveted anyones silver or gold or
clothing. You yourselves know that these hands
of mine have supplied my own needs and the needs
of my companions. In everything I did, I showed
you that by this kind of hard work we must help
the weak, remembering the words the Lord Jesus
himself said It is more blessed to give than to
receive.
Acts 2018-35

2. Paul pours out His life for apprentices by .
. . a. teaching them all they need to know
You know that I have not hesitated to preach
anything that would be helpful to you but have
taught you publicly and from house to house. I
have declared to both Jews and Greeks that they
must turn to God in repentance and have faith in
our Lord Jesus... Therefore, I declare to you
today that I am innocent of the blood of all men.
For I have not hesitated to proclaim to you the
whole will of God.
Acts 2020-21, 26-27

b. being an example to them

c. being willing to take risks for the gospel
And now, compelled by the Spirit, I am going to
Jerusalem, not knowing what will happen to me
there. I only know that in every city the Holy
Spirit warns me that prison and hardships are
facing me. However, I consider my life worth
nothing to me, if only I may finish the race and
complete the task the Lord Jesus has given methe
task of testifying to the gospel of Gods
grace. Now I know that none of you among whom I
have gone about preaching the kingdom will ever
see me again. Acts 2022-25
21
d. challenging them to do what they are called
Keep watch over yourselves and all the flock of
which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers. Be
shepherds of the church of God, which he bought
with his own blood.
Acts 2028
22
e. warning them of dangers to their faith
I know that after I leave, savage wolves will
come in among you and will not spare the flock.
Even from your own number men will arise and
distort the truth in order to draw away disciples
after them. So be on your guard! Remember that
for three years I never stopped warning each of
you night and day with tears. Acts
2029-30

f. asking them to imitate him
Even though you have ten thousand guardians in
Christ, you do not have many fathers, for in
Christ Jesus I became your father through the
gospel. Therefore I urge you to imitate me.
1 Corinthians
415-16
Follow my example, as I follow the example of
Christ. 1 Corinthians 111

a. Everyone needs a Paul . . . 1) to teach you
2) to walk with you 3) to advise you
4) to challenge you

b. Everyone needs a Barnabas . . . 1) who
believes in you
When he came to Jerusalem, he tried to join the
disciples, but they were all afraid of him, not
believing that he really was a disciple. But
Barnabas took him and brought him to the
apostles. He told them how Saul on his journey
had seen the Lord and that the Lord had spoken to
him, and how in Damascus he had preached
fearlessly in the name of Jesus. So Saul stayed
with them and moved about freely in Jerusalem,
speaking boldly in the name of the Lord.
Acts 926-28
28
b. Everyone needs a Barnabas . . . 1) who
believes in you 2) who will encourage you
29
News of this reached the ears of the church at
Jerusalem, and they sent Barnabas to Antioch.
When he arrived and saw the evidence of the grace
of God, he was glad and encouraged them all to
remain true to the Lord with all their hearts.
He was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and
faith, and a great number of people were brought
to the Lord. Then Barnabas went to Tarsus to
look for Saul, and when he found him, he brought
him to Antioch. So for a whole year Barnabas and
Saul met with the church and taught great numbers
of people. The disciples were called Christians
first at Antioch. Acts 1122-26

b. Everyone needs a Barnabas . . . 1) who
believes in you 2) who will encourage
you 3) who will serve with you
When Barnabas and Saul had finished their
mission, they returned from Jerusalem, taking
with them John, also called Mark.
Acts 1225

b. Everyone needs a Barnabas . . . 1) who
believes in you 2) who will encourage
you 3) who will serve with you 4) who will

Some men came down from Judea to Antioch and were
teaching the brothers Unless you are
circumcised, according to the custom taught by
Moses, you cannot be saved. This brought Paul
and Barnabas into sharp dispute and debate with
them. So Paul and Barnabas were appointed, along
with some other believers, to go up to Jerusalem
to see the apostles and elders about this
question.
Acts 151-2

b. Everyone needs a Barnabas . . . 1) who
believes in you 2) who will encourage
you 3) who will serve with you 4) who will
stand with you 5) who will confront you
34
When Peter came to Antioch, I opposed him to his
face, because he was clearly in the wrong.
Before certain men came from James, he used to
eat with the Gentiles. But when they arrived, he
began to draw back and separate himself from the
Gentiles because he was afraid of those who
belonged to the circumcision group.
Galatians 211
Better is open rebuke than hidden love. Wounds
from a friend can be trusted, but an enemy
multiplies kisses. Proverbs 275-6

b. Everyone needs a Barnabas . . . 1) who
believes in you 2) who will encourage
you 3) who will serve with you 4) who will
stand with you 5) who will confront
you 6) with whom you can quarrel
36
Barnabas wanted to take John, also called Mark,
with them, but Paul did not think it wise to
take him, because he had deserted them in
Pamphylia and had not continued with them in the
work. They had such a sharp disagreement that
they parted company. Barnabas took Mark and
sailed for Cyprus, but Paul chose Silas and
left, commended by the brothers to the grace of
the Lord.
Acts 1537-40

mentee a. Everyone needs a Paul b. Everyone
needs a Barnabas . . . c. Everyone needs a
Timothy . . . to mentor
But you know that Timothy has proved himself,
because as a son with his father he has served
with me in the work of the gospel.
