Title: European Digital Upper Atmosphere Server

1
  • European Digital Upper Atmosphere Server
  • DIAS
  • A project co-funded by the eContent programme of
    the European Commission

2
Overview
  • The project aims at the development of a
European digital data collection on the state of
the upper atmosphere and on the efficient
promotion of this collection to the world market.

3
Objectives
  • To develop a pan-European digital data collection
on the state of the upper atmosphere based on
historical data collections and on the real-time
    information provided by several European
    ionospheric stations.
  • To develop a new digital server for the
management and distribution of this collection,
    based on cutting edge technologies.
  • To develop, through the collaboration of the
private sector companies that belong to DIAS
consortium, all necessary actions for the
efficient promotion of this pan-European digital
data collection and new added value products
based on the raw data, to the European and
    worldwide market.

Why Europe needs DIAS?
  • Currently, the existing digital European
    stations operate independently
  • This independent operation creates several
barriers for transforming this information into
usable data, products and services, failing to
address the increased market demands for a
unified collection of historical and real time
    upper-atmosphere data, especially nowcast and
forecast services for the European region.
  • DIAS will overcome this problem by operating a
system competitive to those that exist already
    for Australia and the US.

6
Groups of potential users of DIAS products and
services
  • Aviation industry (civil and military)
  • Defense
  • HF communication Systems
  • Satellite operators
  • Commercial satellite designers
  • Navigation Systems
  • Ground-based systems managers and operators
  • Upper atmosphere researchers
  • Seismic hazards researchers

Data, products and services
  • Real-time and archive ionograms
  • Real-time and archive SAO files
  • Real-time f-plots of fmin, foF2, and M(3000)F2

10
Data, products and services
  • Ionospheric maps over the European area of
monthly median foF2 and M(3000)F2 based on SIRM,
    Zolesi et al., 1993
  • Ionospheric maps over the European area of the
    real-time foF2 and M(3000)F2 for individual
epochs for the now-casting frequency management
based on SIRMUP, Zolesi et al., 2004
  • Ionospheric maps over the European area of
instantaneous foF2 and M(3000)F2 values at a time
    specified by the user
  • Ionospheric forecast maps over the European area
representative of foF2 conditions up to 24-hours
ahead based on SIRMUP, Zolesi et al., 2003,
calculating the forecasting values according to
the Muhtarov et al., 2002 model.

11
Data, products and services
  • Real-time maps of ionospheric electron density
over the European area at user-specified heights
    Stanislawska et al., 2001
  • Maps over the European area of monthly median MUF
    for different transmission points
  • Real-time maps of the Maximum Usable Frequency
(MUF) over the European area for different
    transmission points.
  • Dominici and Zolesi, 1987 Davies, 1990

12
Data, products and services
  • Ionospheric alert indexes foF2AI () and
M(3000)F2AI () with the sections of the map
coloured appropriately to show where the criteria
    hold Cander et al., 2005
