  • Demonstrate proper techniques for preparing
    instruments and supplies on a sterile field
  • Drape furniture and equipment needed for the
    surgical procedure
  • Demonstrate and explain in detail the procedure
    for counting instruments, sponges, needles, and
    other items on the sterile field
  • Demonstrate the initial steps for starting a
    procedure
  • Demonstrate intraoperative handling of sterile
    equipment and supplies
  • Apply the three principles of asepsis to the
    practice of sterile technique

Procedural Sequence
  • Observes the details of anatomy, pathology and
    procedure
  • Handles the specific skills of instrument care
    and passing proficiently
  • Works to predict actions and needs two to three
    steps in advance
  • Pays attention to the entire OR environment
    physical, mental and emotional
  • Communicates effectively with all members of the
    surgical team, particularly the surgeon and the
    circulator

Preparation of Instruments and Supplies
  • Arrange basins, drapes, gowns, gloves, and other
    supplies needed
  • Arrange instruments, sponges, sutures, and other
    supplies on sterile field
  • Apply blades to scalpel handles
  • Prepare and load appropriate suture materials
  • Prepare and label necessary medications and
    solutions
  • Prepare prep table

  • Arrange instruments and other appropriate items
    to begin the case on the mayo stand
  • Prepare electrosurgical pencil and suction
    apparatus

  • Methods- sponge, needles/sharps, instruments,

    back table, ring stands, mayo stand, equipment
  • Placement/securing of supplies- bovie, light
    handles, glove application, suction, sponges,
    magnetic pads, establishment of neutral zone or
    no pass/safe zone

  • Completion of the Setup

Preparation of the Surgical Field
  • Assist team members with gowning and gloving
  • Circulator prepares patient by positioning and
    prepping
  • Assist team members with draping of the patient
  • Bring up your mayo, suction, light handles, bovie
    and two sponges
  • Now we move into the intraoperative phase
