3- VIDEO notes The Life of Mark Twain out West
- When the Civil War started in 1861, Twain went
west to Nevada where his brother was working. - He tried prospecting for several months, but
was unsuccessful, so he started writing for
newspapers.
43. Bret Harte, in California, heard about his
writing and offered him a job. 4. After
challenging another editor to a duel, he had to
leave the state. 5. He went to San Francisco to
work on The Californian, Bret Hartes newspaper.
5- While working in San Francisco, he often went on
vacation to Angels Camp where a friend lived. - They often went to the tavern there to shoot
pool. - In the tavern one day, a previous steamboat
captain told Twain the story of the jumping frog.
69. Twain knew many of the men in the camp and
identified with them because he had prospected
for a while himself. 10. He undoubtedly saw
them gambling, racing horses, etc. while he was
there.
