Title: Place Space and Identity

1
Place Space and Identity
  • Name Doreen Massey, BA (Oxon), MA
  • Position in Faculty Professor of Geography
  • Research interests I have long-term interests in
various aspects of the theorization of 'space'
and 'place'. These interests range through
    globalization (critique of), regional uneven
    development, the reconceptualization of place
and from the philosophical and largely conceptual
    through to the directly political.
  • I co-founded and now co-edit Soundings a journal
    of politics and culture.

3
Place Space Identity
  • No longer do we think of place or region or
nation as simply bounded territories with
    essential external characteristics which somehow
grew out of the soil. Rather we (or many of us)
now lay stress on understanding the identity of
place as the product of its relations with
    elsewhere.
  • Doreen Massey, 2001

4
Place Space and Identity
  • Really thinking spatially means looking out
beyond ourselves a recognition of others.
  • Doreen Massey, 2002

5
Place Space and Identity
  • Drawing maps helps us to
  • communicate spatially from one person to another
  • represent things graphically and
    diagrammatically
  • appreciate the quality of maps drawn by others
  • appreciate the relationships between places on
    the ground

6
Place Space and Identity
  • Places are meeting places of different people,
different groups, different ethnicities. In human
terms they are the entanglement, the meeting up,
of different histories many of them without
    previous connection to others.
  • Doreen Massey,
  • In forthcoming GA Secondary Handbook Teaching
    and Learning Geography
