The Globe Theater

• The Theater built in 1576 by James Burbage in
  Shoreditch, London
• When their lease was out, they tore down the
  theater and rebuilt it on Bankside in Southwark.
• This theater became known as The Globe.

The Globe Theater

• The Globe was built buy the acting company in
  which Shakespeare owned a stake.
• This is why it is sometimes now referred to as
  the Shakespearean Globe.
• It was rebuilt once after a fire, but then torn
  down when the Puritans, led by Oliver Cromwell,
  tore down all the playhouses.
• A reconstruction of The Globe was built when the
  site of the Old Globe Theater was rediscovered in
  the 20th century.

• People from every class came to watch plays at
  the Globe.
• At the cheapest, it cost one penny to stand on
  the ground in front of the stage.
• Better seating cost a few pennies more.
• Plays were performed in the afternoon, since
  there was no artificial lighting.
